Interactive Art Director (Location: New York, NY)

The Art Director will work with the product team to conceptualize, design, and maintain product interfaces, and will be responsible for Photoshop mockups of specific screens and/or components across a portfolio of 23 brands.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design a high-quality, intuitive user experience
  • Create visual documentation that translates easily into development
  • Create wireframes and userflows following UX best practices
  • Translate analytics and market research into design solutions
  • Collaborate with the Product and Editorial teams to establish visual design systems
  • Build consensus around strategic design choices

Executive Editor (Location: New York, NY)

Scholastic seeks an experienced Executive Editor to work with the Executive Director of Product Development & Original Publishing. The person in this position will assist in the supervision of support staff, but will not have direct reports. The team is a fun, fast-paced department responsible for a huge range of books and non-book products. The group is entrepreneurial, and always on the lookout for the next great idea. They are positive team players with a supportive, all-hands-on-deck, no-nonsense approach. They are also a great group of hardworking project managers, striving to maximize the productivity of our work hours while maintaining work-life balance.

Responsibilities include:

  • Acquire, edit and develop a wide variety of products for Scholastic’s proprietary distribution channels, including: novelty books, toys, games, paperback nonfiction, licensed movie and television tie-in titles, and other special formats
  • Oversee all stages of production from concept to publication
  • Identify/hire/manage authors, illustrators, licensors and agents
  • Hire and oversee outside packaging companies when needed
  • Negotiate publishing deals, including costs and payment terms with contributors
  • Develop schedules, budgets and P&Ls
  • Meet regularly with club editors to assess product needs and schedule new products in monthly reading club catalogs
  • Provide direction for promotional copy and product photography for catalog promotion
  • Assist Editorial Director in supervision of support staff

Editor/Senior Editor-Nonfiction (Location: New York, NY)

Scholastic seeks an experienced Editor/Senior Editor with solid project management skills, and who has the ability to work well within a high-volume product development group. The Editor/Senior Editor will take on a variety of nonfiction book and book-plus projects (e.g., science kits). The environment is fun and fast-paced with a huge range of products developed in a variety of ways (packagers, in-house manufacturing, purchased from other publishers). This is a highly creative position that requires excellent communication skills, organization and staff management experience.

Responsibilities include:

  • Acquire, edit and develop a wide variety of educational products for Scholastic’s proprietary distribution channels, including: nonfiction books and science/engineering kits
  • Oversee outside packagers to develop dozens of products annually
  • Oversee all stages of book and kit production from concept to publication
  • Work directly with authors, illustrators, studios and agents
  • Negotiate costs and payment terms with contributors, publishers, packagers and printers
  • Develop schedules, project budgets and P&Ls
  • Monitor workflow between freelance writers/designers, in-house manufacturing, outside packagers, in-house promotions and art groups
  • Ensure product specs, photos and descriptions are accurate in all databases and systems
  • Meet regularly with club editors to assess product needs and schedule new products in book club catalogs
  • Track purchase orders, delivery schedules, contracts and payments via close interaction with internal supply chain, logistics, legal, and accounts payable departments
  • Supervise the writing of promotional copy and product photography for catalog promotion
  • Assist Editorial Director in supervision of support staff

Warehouse/Distribution Manager (Location: Aiea, Hawaii)

Scholastic Book Fairs seeks a Warehouse/Distribution Manager, whose responsibility it will be to plan, schedule, and direct the day-to-day operational activities of a small-sized distribution facility in Aiea, Hawaii. The person in this position will evaluate and assess operations of the Branch to ensure adherence to company standards and policies, and optimal performance.

Responsibilities include:

     Financial Management:

  • In conjunction with Field Director of Operations, plan and prepare annual budget for Branch unit
  • Achieve financial results and manage business-operating costs effectively
  • Achieve budgeted goals, including direct operating costs, revenue per fair through quality production and timely service to customers, and overall branch profitability

     Operations Management:

  • Implement operational efficiency improvements and utilize capacity planning and operational metrics to achieve branch’s financial results
  • Ensure the branch operates in an efficient manner by utilizing effective methods of packing, set-up, delivery, pick-up of book fairs; utilize capacity planning and staffing methods to assure optimum productivity
  • Conduct annual and semi-annual warehouse sales to reduce inventory levels and maximize revenue stream
  • Monitor, evaluate, and manage inventory utilization and inventory control procedures/processes to achieve company objectives
