What to read in 2019 based on your horoscope

It's time to start navigating 2019, readers! While life can be unpredictable we can look to the stars in the sky and the pages of books for some guidance.

We've rounded up our recommendations for each sign to help make this year your best yet.

Capricorn (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

You are ambitious to achieve your goals this year ,and with your sign hosting several planets this year, the universe will be on your side. Your ruler, Saturn, will be housed in your sign in 2019, which bodes well for opportunity in all areas of your life. Be aware of the signs around you — the universe is telling you what you need, which can include needing a break or a chance to slow down, Cap. Use that time to self-reflect and build a solid foundation for the rest of the year.

Recommendations: The books to help you navigate your self-reflection this year include Amber & Dusk by Lyra Selene and The Love & Lies of Rukhsana Ali by Sabina Khan (on sale: 1/29/19).

Aquarius (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

Opposites attract this year, Aquarius. With your home planet Uranus moving into Taurus in early March, you may feel at odds with yourself. Don’t try to do it all. Listen to your body when you’ve taken on too much. Toward the end of the year, Mars will move into Libra bringing a more laid back vibe to your ever-serious work ethic. With peaks and valleys of energy throughout 2019, remind yourself to stay positive.

Recommendations: Take a page out of these books featuring unlikely pairs to guide your own balancing act. Read Perfect by Max Amato (on sale 1/29/19), Bird and Squirrel #5: All Tangled Up by James Burks (on sale 1/29/19), and Unicorn and Yeti: Sparkly New Friends by Heather Ayris Burnell (on sale 4/30/19) this year.

Pisces (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

Your ruling planet Neptune is your sign for all of 2019, Pisces. Your sensitive energy will be heightened this year, and you will be more trusting and giving. Be careful with that energy because others may try to take advantage of you. When Neptune goes into retrograde in June, you’ll be more aware of those who don’t have your best interest in mind. Keep in mind that those who burn you should not deter you from continuing your selfless nature for those who deserve it.

Recommendations: The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins will help you keep an arm’s length from those who don’t have your best interest in mind, while staying true to your selfless nature.

Aries (Mar 20 – Apr 19)

Get ready for a super powerful year, Aries! Your ruling planet Mars begins the year strong in your sign allowing you to fully embrace the new year. With the sun entering your sign as winter turns into spring, you’ll be fully prepared to blossom into your true self. There’s nothing holding you back from showing the world exactly who are.

Recommendations: Embrace your power, Aries, with reads like Say Something by Peter H. Reynolds (on sale 2/26/19), Dog Man: Brawl of the Wild by Dav Pilkey, and Dactyl Hill Squad by Daniel José Older.

Taurus (Apr 20 – May 20)

It looks like your year should be clear sailing, Taurus, as your ruler, Venus, doesn’t go through any retrograde periods in 2019 — but don’t get too comfortable. While your areas of love and money should stabilize under Venus’ rule, it’s important to not become stagnant. When Uranus enters your sign at the beginning of March, don’t resist the planet’s energy of change. Keep an open mind and use the time to be introspective to figure out what you want this year.

Recommendations: It can be easy to get comfortable when things are going steady. Read Not If I Save You First by Ally Carter and What Would She Do? by Kay Woodward this year to help you be proactive.

Gemini (May 21 – Jun 20)

Get ready for an adventurous year because you’re up for anything in 2019. Your home planet Mercury will spend three retrogrades in the emotional water signs, which will affect your logical nature. Use these retros to step out of your emotional comfort zone. At the start of March you’ll be contemplating a big change, which can be scary but can also be really good.

Recommendations: Itching to get your adventurous year going? Dive into The Very Impatient Caterpillar by Ross Burach (on sale: 2/26/19), Geronimo Stilton The Journey Through Time #6 (on Sale 1/26/19), and The Serpent’s Secret by Sayantani DasGupta to gear up for any big changes the year may bring.

Cancer (Jun 21 – Jul 22)

Get ready to take control, Crabs! The sun will be spending time in your sign during the summer, which will have you feeling confident during your favorite time of year. If you felt yourself retreating into your comfort zone in 2018, be prepared to break free in 2019. The full moon in January will expose you to the truths you’ve been avoiding. Pay attention — they will help you set off on the path of your destiny.

Recommendations: All The Crooked Saints by Maggie Stiefvater; The Moon Within by Aida Salazar; and I’m Fun, Too (LEGO) by Jonathan Fenske will help you chart the course to following your destiny in 2019.

Leo (Jul 23 – Aug 22)

Starting the year off with a supermoon at the end of January will make it hard to hide anything. If you’re experiencing big changes it will be difficult to keep the negative side effects to yourself, but you’ll be more than ready to shout your successes to the world. The intense energy at this time could lead to prolonged drama, so be prepared to check yourself, Leo, before you say something you can’t take back.

Recommendations: Learn lessons in communication and confidence from Riverdale: The Day Before by Micol OstowTell Me Everything by Sarah Enni, and Drama by Raina Telgemeier to let your best self shine this year.

Virgo (Aug 23 – Sep 22)

The beginning of 2019 might have you feeling torn between which path to take this year when the supermoon is in your sign in February. The struggle between your emotional side and your practical side can make you feel stuck in place. Don’t feel like you have to keep these entities separate. Rather, you should use both your head and heart this year to help you reach your goals. It’s about balance, not singular choice.

Recommendations: Facing a choice this year? Read City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab, Monkey and Cake: What Is Inside This Box by Drew Daywalt (on sale: 2/26/19), and Goosebumps Slappy World #7: It’s Alive! It’s Alive! (on sale 2/26/19) to help you decide which path is best to take.

Libra (Sep 23 – Oct 22)

2019 is a year of renewal for you, Libra! With no retrogrades in store for Venus, you can harness the balance you’ll feel all year to focus on your personal relationships. A full moon lands in your sign in March and the sun spends time in your sign starting in late September, which will prompt you to focus on repairing relationships in all aspects of your life throughout the year.

Recommendations: Get ready to get personal with these reads, Libra! Listen To Your Heart by Kasie West, I Need a Hug by Aaron Blabey, and You Don’t Know Everything, Jilly P by Alex Gino will help you navigate those tricky personal relationships.

Scorpio (Oct 23 – Nov 21)

It’s time to get serious about the big picture, Scorp. Your co-rulers Pluto and Mars are on your side to help you achieve your dreams. With Mars staying direct all year you won’t lose any drive, and Pluto is remaining in Capricorn will help you retain power. Use this combination wisely though; don’t let yourself get worn out or off track.

Recommendations: Stay focused with Mac B. and The Impossible Crime by Mac Barnett and Endgames (Newsprints #2) by Ru Xu this year, Scorp. These books will fill you with determination and drive.

Sagittarius (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

You love to learn new things, Sag, so get ready for a big year of lessons. Your home planet Jupiter will be in your outgoing sign until early December, which will allow you to be open-minded to new experiences. Jupiter’s retrograde in April will have you feeling more reflective than usual. Use this time to learn from past lessons and gear up for all the new opportunities headed your way.

Recommendations: Ready to learn, Sag? Take notes from The Music of What Happens by Bill Konigsberg (on Sale: 2/26/19), Misunderstood Shark: Friends Don’t Eat Friends by Ame Dyckman (on sale: 1/29/19), and Mr. Wolf’s Class: Mystery Club by Aron Nels Steinke (on sale: 2/26/19) to be as open-minded as possible this year.

Happy reading this year, and may the stars be on your side!

10. All the Twitter takeovers

So. Many. Twitter. Takeovers. Graphix gave you a sneak peek at so many of their great new titles by revealing panels on social media. Here’s a roundup of some of the excerpts they shared via Twitter takeover:

11 books that remind us families come in all shapes and sizes

The holiday season reminds us that spending time with loved ones can be the best gift of all. Family might look different for everyone, but at its core, it's the group of people we surround ourselves with and love (even when it can be difficult).

From families made up of friends you've chosen to those filled with dozens of aunts, uncles, and cousins, we've rounded up books that celebrate some of the many beautiful shapes a family can take.

The Lotterys Plus One by Emma Donoghue

Sumac Lottery is nine years old and the self-proclaimed "good girl" of her (VERY) large, (EXTREMELY) unruly family. And what a family the Lotterys are: four parents, children both adopted and biological, and a menagerie of pets, all living and learning together in a sprawling house called Camelottery. Then one day, the news breaks that one of their grandfathers is suffering from dementia and will be coming to live with them. And not just any grandfather; the long dormant "Grumps," who fell out with his son so long ago that he hasn't been part of any of their lives. uddenly, everything changes. Sumac has to give up her room to make the newcomer feel at home. She tries to be nice, but prickly Grumps's clearly disapproves of how the Lotterys live: whole grains, strange vegetables, rescue pets, a multicultural household... He's worse than just tough to get along with; Grumps has got to go! But can Sumac help him find a home where he belongs?

The Lotterys More or Less by Emma Donoghue

Sumac Lottery is the keeper of her family's traditions — from Pow Wow to Holi, Carnival to Hogmanay, Sumac's on guard to make sure that no Lottery celebration gets forgotten. But this winter all Sumac's seasonal plans go awry when a Brazilian visitor overstays his welcome. A terrible ice storm grounds all flights, so one of her dads and her favorite brother can't make it home from India. And then the power starts going out across the city... Can Sumac hang on to the spirit of the season, even if nothing is going like a Lottery holiday should?

Cleo Edison Oliver: Playground Millonaire by Sundee Tucker Frazier

Cleopatra Edison Oliver has always been an entrepreneur, just like her inspiration, successful businesswoman Fortune A. Davies. So when Cleo's fifth-grade teacher assigns her class a "Passion Project," Cleo comes up with her best business idea yet: the finest "tooth-pulling" company in town. With the help of her best friend Caylee, a Nerf gun, her dad's tablet, and her patented Persuasion Power, Cleo's Quick and Painless Tooth Removal Service starts to take off.

But even the best made plans, by the best CEOs, go awry sometimes. A minor barfing incident during a tooth-pulling operation causes Cleo to lose customers. Caylee, initially enthusiastic about the business, grows distant as Cleo neglects their friendship in lieu of getting more customers. And when a mean classmate makes fun of Cleo for being adopted, everything comes crashing down. Will she be able to rescue her business, salvage her friendship with Caylee, and discover that her true home has been here all along?

Lucky Luna by Diana López

Luna Ramos has more cousins than she can count, and even though her mom says that makes her lucky, Luna knows that every time she gets in trouble (and she gets in trouble a lot), one of her primas is responsible.
But when mischievous Luna locks her know-it-all cousin Claudia in the bathroom at her cousin's quinceañera, Luna has no one to blame but herself. Her punishment? She's not allowed to wear hats for a whole month, which is a big deal because Luna's always been embarrassed by her hair, and hats make her feel more comfortable.
To make things even worse, Claudia is transferring to her school, and they’re going to be in the same fifth grade class together. Now Claudia will have a chance to tattle on her even more than she already does! Luna’s grandmother offers some sage advice, but since it’s in Spanish, Luna gets it all wrong. When the kids at school begin making fun of Claudia, Luna must decide what matters more: family or her reputation.

Princess Truly in I am Princess Truly by Kelly Greenwalt

If you believe it, you can achieve it! Princess Truly is smart, courageous, and can do anything she sets her mind to do. She can tame lions, race fast cars, fly to the moon, and dance on the stars. Lively rhyme and colorful illustrations are beautifully combined to show little ones that they can do anything too.

Princess Truly was inspired by Kelly Greenwalt's adopted daughters, Calista and Kaia, who are smart and spunky, and who have magical curls of their own.

Kinda Like Brothers by Coe Booth

Jarrett doesn't trust Kevon. But he has to share a room with him anyway.

It was one thing when Jarrett's mom took care of foster babies who needed help. But this time it's different. This time the baby who needs help has an older brother, a kid Jarrett's age named Kevon.

Everyone thinks Jarrett and Kevon should be friends, but that's not going to happen. Not when Kevon's acting like he's better than Jarrett, and not when Jarrett finds out Kevon's keeping some major secrets.

Jarrett doesn't think it's fair that he has to share his room, his friends, and his life with some stranger. He has to do something about it, but what?

The Porcupine of Truth by Bill Konigsberg

The author of Openly Straight returns with an epic road trip involving family history, gay history, the girlfriend our hero can't have, the grandfather he never knew, and the Porcupine of Truth.

Carson Smith is resigned to spending his summer in Billings, Montana, helping his mom take care of his father, a dying alcoholic he doesn't really know. Then he meets Aisha Stinson, a beautiful girl who has run away from her difficult family, and Pastor John Logan, who's long held a secret regarding Carson's grandfather, who disappeared without warning or explanation thirty years before. Together, Carson and Aisha embark on an epic road trip to find the answers that might save Carson's dad, restore his fragmented family, and discover the "Porcupine of Truth" in all of their lives.

Hey, Kiddo by Jarrett J. Krosoczka

In kindergarten, Jarrett Krosoczka's teacher asks him to draw his family, with a mommy and a daddy. But Jarrett's family is much more complicated than that. His mom is an addict, in and out of rehab, and in and out of Jarrett's life. His father is a mystery; Jarrett doesn't know where to find him, or even what his name is. Jarrett lives with his grandparents, two very loud, very loving, very opinionated people who had thought they were through with raising children until Jarrett came along.

Jarrett goes through his childhood trying to make his non-normal life as normal as possible, finding a way to express himself through drawing even as so little is being said to him about what's going on. Only as a teenager can Jarrett begin to piece together the truth of his family, reckoning with his mother and tracking down his father.
Hey, Kiddo is a profoundly important memoir about growing up in a family grappling with addiction, and finding the art that helps you survive.

All the Crooked Saints by Maggie Stiefvater

Here is a thing everyone wants: A miracle.
Here is a thing everyone fears: What it takes to get one.
Any visitor to Bicho Raro, Colorado, is likely to find a landscape of dark saints, forbidden love, scientific dreams, miracle-mad owls, estranged affections, one or two orphans, and a sky full of watchful desert stars. At the heart of this place you will find the Soria family, who all have the ability to perform unusual miracles. And at the heart of this family are three cousins longing to change its future: Beatriz, the girl without feelings, who wants only to be free to examine her thoughts; Daniel, the Saint of Bicho Raro, who performs miracles for everyone but himself; and Joaquin, who spends his nights running a renegade radio station under the name Diablo Diablo. They are all looking for a miracle. But the miracles of Bicho Raro are never quite what you expect.
From bestselling author Maggie Stiefvater, a gripping tale of darkness, miracles, and family. Saints. Miracles. Family. Romance. Death. Redemption.

Kristy's Big Day by Gale Galligan, Ann M. Martin

Kristy's mom is getting married and Kristy is her bridesmaid! However, 14 kids are coming in town for the wedding. It's the biggest job the BSC has ever had, but they'll work together to make sure Kristy's big day is a success in this new full-color graphic novel adapted by USA Today bestselling author Gale Galligan.

Just the Two of Us by Will Smith

Will Smith — musician, actor, and father — brings us a moving celebration of fatherhood. The song's heartfelt lyrics and Kadir Nelson's vibrant paintings capture the beauty and intensity of a father's love as his child grows from a boy into a man. This poignant portrait will resonate with fathers and sons everywhere.

What to read based on your favorite Thanksgiving staple

Staring down your “to be read” pile can feel a lot like not knowing where to begin eating on your Thanksgiving plate. But even with all the tasty and tempting options in front of you, everyone has their favorite dish. Use our guide to determine what you should read during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Biscuits - Mac Undercover by Mac Barnett

Biscuits come first at Thanksgiving. Similarly, Mac Undercover is about “the before."  Before Mac Barnett was a bestselling author, he was a kid. And while he was a kid, he was a spy. Not just any spy, but a spy for the Queen of England. This chapter book is buttered with wit, secret identities, and karate hijinks that will have you reaching for a second helping with the upcoming book 2!

Soup - The Baby–Sitters Club graphic novels

While it may not be chilly where you are celebrating, soup can be a way to warm up to the holiday season. The Baby-Sitters Club are light-hearted, but hearty stories that will ease you into reading graphic novels. They have comforting messages and remind us that being together is the best part of the holidays.

Green Bean Casserole - Dactyl Hill Squad by Daniel José Older

Jacqueline Woodson described Dactyl Hill Squad as "true fire," which is also how I describe my mom's green bean casserole. Green beans sound healthy — kind of like historical fiction — but once you take a bite of the crispy fried onion topping and the creamy sauce, you know it's SO much more than that. Just like how Dactyl Hill Squad is about the Civil War... with dinosaurs. See? SO much more.

Mac and Cheese - The Geronimo Stilton series

Geronimo Stilton’s Thanksgiving plate would probably only consist of mac and cheese, especially if it used Stilton cheese! Filled with cheesy humor, this series is a staple that’s always a hit.  Whether you like baked, traditional, or a modern twist on the dish, the Geronimo Stilton universe has a cheesy story for your taste.

Cornbread - Dog Man series by Dav Pilkey

Not even Petey the Cat could deny the deliciousness of cornbread. Once you start, you can’t put down the buttery creation. If you experience even a slice of the adventures of Dog Man and Li’l Petey, you won’t want to put down this series either. Dog Man’s story will warm your heart and butter you up for the holiday season.

Sweet Potato Casserole - Snow in Love by Nic Stone, Melissa de la Cruz, Aimee Friedman, Kasie West

Fully satisfy your sweet tooth with four swoon-worthy holiday stories wrapped up in one novel. From a snowy road trip to a holiday scavenger hunt, each of these stories will have you feeling warm and mushy from start to finish. Like sweet potato casserole, Snow in Love will have you coming back for marshmallow topped seconds, and thirds!

Mashed Potatoes - Smile by Raina Telgemeier

Mashed potatoes are the ultimate comfort food — warm, creamy, filling, and they go with just about anything. And what's more comforting than a book that you can return to over and over again? Smile by Raina Telgemeier is one of those stories that can be read and re-read endlessly. Each time, you'll take something new away from the story about friends, family, middle school, and dental work.

Stuffing - Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland

Stuffing is a long-standing Thanksgiving tradition that we always return to. Similarly, Wings of Fire is a tried-and-true series we will never get tired of reading! With the twelfth book, The Hive Queen, coming December 26, AND more graphic novel adaptations on the way, there’s plenty fantasy content to fill up on.

Turkey - The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

Thanksgiving’s most famous dish is of course turkey, and the Harry Potter series is an instantly recognizable icon of its own right. Both are fitting to feed a whole family, or just one very hungry reader, and both pair well with a butterbeer and a Weasley sweater for the coziest holiday experience.

Apple Pie - The Bad Guys series by Aaron Blabey

An apple a day is supposed to be good for you, so why shouldn’t sugar-coated apples stuffed into a flakey crust be considered good?! Much like pie, Mr. Wolf, Mr. Shark, Mr. Snake, and Mr. Piranha, are bad guys who want to be good! No need to feel bad about putting an extra scoop of ice cream on top of your slice or reading the whole series while your family takes a post dinner nap.

Happy eating and reading!

Two new books on the way from Raina Telgemeier

This weekend at New York Comic Con, bestselling graphic novelist Raina Telgemeier shared some big news: Two new books are on the way!

First up is Share Your Smile, on sale April 30, 2019! For readers interested in writing, drawing, or both, Share Your Smile will guide readers in brainstorming ideas, making lists, featuring their personal photos, and using their imagination as a catalyst for storytelling. For additional inspiration, Share Your Smile also features a behind-the-scenes look at Telgemeier’s work, including a teaser to her new memoir.

Speaking of her new memoir... to great fanfare, Raina revealed the cover and synopsis of her next graphic novel memoir: Guts!

On sale September 10, 2019, Guts is a graphic novel memoir, following Smile and Sisters. Thoughtful, charming, and funny, Guts brings readers a true story of growing up and gathering the courage to face—and conquer—one’s fears. In Guts, young Raina wakes up one night with a terrible upset stomach. Her mom has one, too, so it’s probably just a bug. Raina eventually returns to school, where she’s dealing with the usual highs and lows: friends, not-friends, and classmates who think the school year is just one long gross-out session. It soon becomes clear that Raina’s tummy trouble isn’t going away...and it coincides with her worries about food, school, and changing friendships.
