Teachers, get ready for summer reading!

Think it's too early to start planning for summer reading? Think again! Pre-registration for the 2016 Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge begins this coming Monday at 9am ET! This year, pre-registration starts earlier than ever because we want to give educators plenty of time to get students signed up and equipped with resources like book lists and reading logs. Whether you're brand new to the program or a returning user in need of a refresher, see below for what to expect this summer.

Don't forget to mark your calendar and visit scholastic.com/summer on Monday, March 21st at 9am ET to get started!

Program overview:

  • The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is a free online reading program dedicated to encouraging kids to read every day this summer. Studies show that when kids don’t read over the summer, they lose core reading skills and fall behind when they go back to school. This year’s Summer Reading Challenge focuses on the helping kids achieve the “Summer Leap” — the learning or reading skills gained during the summer months that help students prepare to tackle the upcoming school year.
  • Through the program you can easily:
    • Register students for the Summer Reading Challenge (need help? Use these instructions.)
    • Track students’ reading progress throughout the summer
    • Email parents to let them know students are signed up for the Summer Reading Challenge
    • Check the interactive map to see how many minutes your school—and other schools—have read
    • Download summer reading book lists and printables

Program theme:

  • This year’s theme is “Be a Reading Superhero” and it’s all about believing in kids and encouraging them to be the best independent readers they can be. This summer, we want kids to read more books, log more reading minutes, earn rewards, and become a reading superhero! To help motivate kids to keep reading throughout the 18 weeks of the summer (May 9 – September 9), we are inviting 18 Scholastic authors to create their own personalized “How I Became a Reading Superhero" story to inspire kids to keep reading. Each week, kids can unlock a new story and discover fun facts about some of their favorite authors, enter sweepstakes, and win virtual prizes to reward them for their reading.

Prizes for your school:

  • Enter the Dav Pilkey Be a Reading Superhero Contest! From March 21 to April 11, K–8 educators can enter the new Dav Pilkey Be a Reading Superhero Contest for a chance to win a book for every student in your school! To enter, just tell us how you’re encouraging your kids to read over the summer!
  • Win a "Best in State" award! The schools that log the most minutes in every state in the U.S. will receive “Best in State” recognition and a Celebration in a Box and Reading Plaque for a school-wide reading celebration. Each winning school will also appear in the 2017 Scholastic Book of World Records.

Stay connected on social media:

  • Make sure you follow us on social media! (Here's our Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube!) We'll be sharing program updates and free resources at #summerreading from now until September!
  • Join chats with experts, authors, and teachers who will share success stories, tips, book recs and more.

This morning BuzzFeed revealed the cover of Dav Piley's next book, Dog Man, a spin-off from his wildly popular Captain Underpants series! Dog Man is a comic book hero within the Captain Underpants world created by main characters George and Harold when they were sent to detention.

Here's a brief description of Dog Man:

When Greg the police dog and his cop companion are injured on the job, a life-saving surgery changes the course of history, and Dog Man is born. This heroic hound has a real nose for justice. But can this crime-biting canine resist the call of the wild to answer the call of duty?

Dav Pilkey was a 2nd grade zinester

Zine month is upon us, and while these self-published items have grown in popularity in the past decade+, they have actually been around for a while. For sci-fi buffs, fan magazines have been around for several decades, and the punk music scene in the latter half of the 20th century was a hotbed for the creation of zines with music and concert reviews. Most of the zines that I have encountered are created with 8.5”x11” sheets of paper photocopied and folded in half, but these volumes can come in the most creative containers imaginable – cloth envelopes, bottles, paper bags, you name it! Beyond copying, they can be produced using silk screening, painting, sewing, the local copy shop, or by using an online service that will formally bind them and give you an ISBN number. The diversity in production is also strongly reflected in the diversity of content; social justice news, art, photography, poetry, political commentary, short stories, reviews, essays, nonfiction, comics… there is a lot to look forward to if you haven’t tried zines yet.

One of the places where you may have run into a zine without realizing it is in school (literary magazines, independent student papers), so I am overly excited to reflect on the Scholastic series that features two elementary school zinesters – Dav Pilkey’s Captain Underpants collection! George Beard and Harold Hutchins, fourth grade best friends, are the proprietors of their own ‘underground press’ – Treehouse Comix, Inc. With George writing and Harold drawing, the boys create adventures for the infamous superhero Captain Underpants. To publish and share their work, they sneak into the school office to make copies of their latest issues – and then they sell them on the playground for 50 cents each!

Pilkey’s epic novels are engaging not only because of the interactive flip-o-rama action sequences, but also because he gives readers a story within a story – actual issues of George and Harold’s comic zine. As he explains in “The Origin of Captain Underpants”, Dav Pilkey invented this underwear-clad hero when he was eight years old, and he made his own original comic books. While his second grade teacher may have ripped up his first comic – “UNDERWEAR IS NOT FUNNY!” – these days we encourage students to self-publish as part of the writing workshop, a concept I learned about studying Lucy Calkins in graduate school. I took a look in the archive, and located some of our teaching resources and professional books that discuss student publishing, many of which are available as e-books. Try out some of the activities within these volumes, and we can grow the next generation of George Beards, Harold Hutchins, Dav Pilkeys, and experimental zinesters!

25 Best-Ever Collaborative Books for Young Writers, by Susan Stroeher – these templates and shapes will help create thematic collections of student writing.

35 Ready-To-Go Ways to Publish Students' Research and Writing, by Michael Gravois – lock books, trioramas, flap books, accordion books, writing cubes, dictionaries… these will appeal to kinesthetic and tactile learners.

Books Don’t Have to Be Flat, by Jean Mumper and Kathy Pike – books in cans, artifact box books, matchbook books, and more that will inspire creative packaging.

Easy-to-Make Books That Target Specific Reading Needs, by Florence Miyamoto and Joan Novelli – name books, paper bag books, letter books, photography books… lots of great ideas.

First Grade Writing Workshop, by Judy Lynch – pages 113-122 give tips on creating a publishing center in your classroom, what materials to have on hand, how-to guides for parents, info about the author/cover/dedication/copyright pages, and much more.

The Ultimate Epic Guide to Using Dav Pilkey’s Books in the Classroom – at the end of this guide there is a graphic autobiography created by Dav Pilkey that you can share with students before having them create their own.

Read a book to your dog

Did you know its “National Train Your Dog Month”?  Besides teaching your pup the usual commands such as “fetch,” “sit” and “stay,” how about, “read a book”?

Sound crazy? Not really. One of the best things to get kids motivated to read every day is opening a book with their furry friend.

Reading aloud is crucial to a child’s literacy development and their overall confidence. Why not have them read to the least judgmental and most attentive (well, sometimes) member of the family?  It’s a great way for your child to bond with human’s best friend.

Hey, even if you are an adult, this can be a fun way to bond with Fido. I sometimes catch myself reading aloud new articles to my two dogs after a long day at work. Let’s just say they are both very well-versed in global affairs.

It seems this idea is very common. Just take a look at the art of our Read Every Day campaign. Six of the 13 original artworks by acclaimed illustrators portray our canine companions jumping into a great book. See the images below of these well-read pups.

So grab a picture book, newspaper or comic book and make reading aloud a “howling” good time.

Share pictures of your pups reading a great book on Twitter (@Scholastic). Happy reading!

Meet the artist: Dav Pilkey

This week, we continue our celebration of The Art of Read Every Day with the artwork of children's book author and illustrator, Dav Pilkey. (Heard of him? Yea, I thought so.)

Dav Pilkey is the acclaimed creator of the bestselling Captain Underpants series, which has more than 50 million books in print. Pilkey is also the author/illustrator of numerous popular and award-winning books for children, including the Ricky Ricotta series and The Paperboy, a Caldecott Honor Book. He's also teamed up with Jeff Kinney on "Story Smashup," a classroom webcast coming in January.

Dav is a hero around here. Not only does he make children and adults laugh out loud with his Captain Underpants books, he also sends us incredible videos he's made at home (Reading Makes Cats Jealous, Reading Gives You Superpowers) and is constantly on the road visiting schools and delighted fans.

Dav's artwork for our Art of Read Every Day campaign really says it all. True to his signature style of illustration, this artwork is colorful, lively, and playful. He wanted to focus his piece on the importance of togetherness, so he featured Super Diaper baby and his dad reading together. "Almost everything is more fun if you do it with someone you care about," he says. We agree, Dav.

Visit the collection and you'll discover a video of Dav sketching and painting this artwork (with his pet beetle!), a free downloadable poster, and companion Common Core-ready discussion guides (grades K-2 and 3-5).

Enjoy!
