It feels like just yesterday that I sat down to organize the "Best Books of 2013" lists for an OOM post—hard to believe an entire year has gone by! Though some may argue there are already too many "best of" lists circulating, we've compiled one of our own rounding up the fantastic must-read lists that our publishing-industry colleagues have put together. There are just so many awesome books that came out in 2014. Anyone have any tips as to where we should start?
What would you say were the best books of the year? We'd love your thoughts!
- First up: The New York Times with its list of 100 notable books of 2014, as well as its list of best book covers. (Bookish, too, has a list of best book covers.)
- I know I mentioned this last year, but NPR's "Book Concierge" is awesome. The interactive guide to 2014's greatest reads lets you filter staff and critics' picks and check out favorites from years past.
- Like NPR, The Wall Street Journal beautifies their end-of-year book lists with a fancy interface (you can even use the site to build your own reading list!). They analyzed ten recent "best books" lists to create their overarching master list for 2014—and it's pretty great.
- The Huffington Post's infographic doesn't disappoint. It's a great way to visualize the 20 most-recommended books of the year.
- USA TODAY, too, put together a list of 10 books they loved reading in 2014. The Washington Post did the same. Their picks can be found here. Oh, and we can't forget the Los Angeles Times. Here are their picks.
- Another list I always look forward to: The New Yorker's.
- Keeping with their "Top 10" theme, TIME broke their picks for best books into categories: Top 10 YA Books, Top 10 Nonfiction Books, and Top 10 Fiction Books.
- Kirkus also divides their picks into categories, and we're honored to have several titles featured on the "Best Children's Books of 2014" and "Best Teen Books of 2014" lists!
- Publishers Weekly looked back at the 9,000+ titles they reviewed this year to choose their favorites; meanwhile, School Library Journal reviewed the 250+ titles that received a SLJ star and selected 70 for their end-of-year lists.
- Over on Slate, editors, bloggers, and columnists picked their favorite books of the year.
- As an avid Goodreads user, I'm always excited to see which titles readers cite as their favorite. The 2014 list doesn't disappoint! Looks like it's time to update my queue....
- From Flavorwire, here are 25 great books you might've missed in 2014. Plus this round-up of 21 page-turners via Mashable.
- According to The Economist, these are the year's must-reads.
- Across the pond, the BBC called these ten books the best of 2014. What were readers' favorites? These, according to The Guardian. (And these, according to Real Simple.)
- Editors' picks. Customer favorites. Best children's books. Amazon's "Best Books of 2014" is, once again, nothing short of comprehensive.
- We were excited to see one of our titles on this BuzzFeed list of the Best YA Books of 2014!
- Fellow fans of the blog Brain Pickings may want to check out the "Definitive Reading List of the 14 Best Books of 2014."
- Another great round-up: Vanity Fair's list of books from 2014 that you can spend 2015 reading.
