Today is Melissa Luttman's last day as an intern here in Scholastic's corporate communications department! After a wonderful summer, we asked her some questions about her experience. What's the most surprising thing you learned/uncovered during your summer internship?
Melissa Luttman: Although many people know Scholastic primarily as a publisher and book club/book fair operator, this company is so much more than that. Working in corporate communications has given me the opportunity to take a peek into many of the areas Scholastic is involved with. And, of course, I’ve learned that this company is full of dedicated and enthusiastic people who make all of that happen!
Is there a book you read as a result of hearing about it at Scholastic?
ML: Although I can’t think of any specific books I heard about this summer, I do have a funny story that’s related to this. I went years without reading the Hunger Games trilogy because I wasn’t sure I personally would enjoy it. But while I was studying abroad, I had a roommate, Anna, who was obsessed with the books and kept trying to get me to read them. I declined…until I learned I’d be interning at Scholastic over the summer! At that point I decided that I needed to give Katniss a shot. You can probably guess what happened: I was hooked and read the entire Hunger Games trilogy over a long weekend. Anna was thrilled.
What's next for you?
I’m excited to return to Holy Cross for my senior year after spending a year away. After I graduate, I’d like to work for a few years before graduate school. Children’s publishing is an area I’d definitely consider returning to, but I’m also thinking about becoming a teacher.
