This week on the podcast, we sat down with award-winning authors and literacy educators Kylene Beers and Robert E. Probst to talk about their new book, Disrupting Thinking: Why How We Read Matters. They shared their hope that teachers will start looking at reading as a tranformational experience rather than a practice of decoding, recalling, and responding to questions.
Ultimately, they say, they want young people to become not only skillful readers, but also responsive readers who are aware of their own emotions and reactions while reading; responsible readers who think about what the text means for others, society, and themselves; and compassionate readers who, through reading, develop empathy that helps them understand others.
