Scholastic Collaborates with Camden City School District on Reading and Family Engagement

On December 18th, Creative Arts High School students in Camden, New Jersey, gathered in the gym to bring to life the story of The Quickest Kid in Clarksville through a unique performance for Cream Elementary School students and their parents grades K-3. This activity was part of a book distribution program and larger collaboration between the Camden City School District (CCSD) and Scholastic that aims to foster a love for reading, improve literacy skills, and increase family engagement in children's education in the Camden City School District.

During the event, students and their families sipped on hot cocoa while learning more about incorporating strategic reading practices at home from State District Superintendent Katrina T. McCombs, and Dr. Terica Butler, Director of Development and Implementation at Scholastic.

As part of these practices, Camden City School District is set to engage with the following Scholastic literacy initiatives:

  1. Scholastic R.E.A.L. (Read, Engage/Excel, Achieve, Lead), is a literacy-based mentorship program designed to support community members in mentoring students through interactive read-alouds and book discussions.
  2. My Books Every Day is a books-to-home program that encourages the joy of reading and strengthens family involvement in children's literacy.
  3. Scholastic Literacy Events: In collaboration with Dr. Karen Mapp, a leading family engagement expert and co-creator of the Dual-Capacity Framework, the Scholastic Literacy Events are designed to cultivate reading and writing in the home.
According to the latest edition of the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report™, 41% of children get most of their books from school – making year-round access to books even more critical when schools are on break.
