NBA Referees take a "Time Out for Reading"

At Scholastic we believe all children need positive role models, as young people will be what they see. Research has shown children who participated in mentoring programs were more likely to pursue higher education and are more likely to aspire to success and to become lifelong readers and learners if they have role models at home and in the community.

To ensure students have positive role models and access to books, Scholastic is proud to work with organizations such as the National Basketball Referees Association (NBRA). Last season the NBRA created “Time Out for Reading” as a way to give back to the communities they serve. Through Time Out for Reading, the NBA referees volunteer their time to read to classrooms to get students engaged in learning.

Last week I caught up with veteran NBA Referee and 2014 recipient of the Gold Whistle Award, Joe Crawford to hear more about the great work behind Time Out for Reading.

For Joe, he says the most rewarding part of Time Out for Reading is “having the opportunity to mingle with kids and being a positive influence in their lives.”

Understanding the importance of a strong education Joe was proud to share his educational accomplishments, “I went back and got my college degree in 2009 and it was the most rewarding thing I have ever done – I am proud when people ask me what college I graduated from and I can actually tell them Neumann University.”
