Glowing Review: Comic Kids and Scholastic Host Literacy Event to Launch New Dog Man Book

Comic Kids, a Miami-based nonprofit, teamed up with Scholastic to host a drawing and literacy event at the local Big Brothers Big Sisters to encourage reading and help launch the newest title, The Scarlet Shedder, from the #1 global best selling Dog Man series, authored by Dav Pilkey.

During the event, kids enjoyed a special read-aloud of the latest Dog Man book and then used glow-in-the-dark supplies to draw their favorite character from the series with guidance from Kat Barrow-Horth and Reed Horth, co-founders of Comic Kids. When the lights came on, each child was surprised with their own free copy of The Scarlet Shedder from Scholastic!

Comic Kids co-founder Kat Barrow-Horth says: “The event was great! The kids’ minds were blown away with the new Dog Man books. When I asked them who was bringing the book to school to show their friends, everyone raised their hands. I had tears in my eyes a few times. They were laughing and listening to the first chapter and excitedly flipping through the pages. Thank you for the support and the opportunity to make these children so inspired to read and draw.”

Comic Kids’ mission to help underserved kids find their inner superhero and express themselves through comics, cartoons, and books, plays a critical role in encouraging Miami students’ reading growth.

As the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report™ shows us that more than half of kids (52%) say they like attending events that involve reading at their school or in their community, and nearly all parents (96%) agree that every child needs to have at least a few books of their own at home– making events like these critical in supporting a child’s journey into exploring reading, art, and creativity.
