Colleen Prendergast from our Trade Publishing group joins us today on the blog to talk about tips for getting your child reading ready and an exciting campaign we're launching around Bob Books!
Many parents are surprised at how fast-paced and demanding the reading expectations are in the first years of school. If your child is starting kindergarten this fall, help her get ready to read now and she'll have a valuable head start in the classroom. Bob Books are perfect for beginning readers and offer an easy introduction to reading because they use carefully designed, simple phonics and engaging storylines. Soon your child will be able to say proudly “I read the whole book!”
As we gear up for back to school season, here are a few tips for helping your child get started with reading:
- Have your child practice recognizing and making the sounds of all of the letters in the alphabet. This will make it easier to sound out words when the time comes to practice reading.
- Encourage your child to create and tell their own stories. Saying words out loud is a great way for them to become familiar with the pronunciation of words and will come in very handy while they are learning to read.
- Don’t try to rush your child into books they aren’t ready for. Start with a first reader series that is specially designed to help your kid learn how to read.
