A couple of weeks ago, a lot of Scholastic employees noticed some strange stuff going on in our Educational Resource Center here at NYC headquarters. Are those...Christmas lights? Why is that cloud glowing pink and purple? What is going on here?
All the blinking and flashing turned out to be Light-up Learning! a pop-up maker fair, which Scholastic hosted in conjunction with Progressive Arts Alliance. We invited local New York City fourth graders to spend the morning engaging in fun and fascinating STEM projects. In the course of just a few hours, the kids built simple circuits, parallel circuits, LED cloud pins and light-up pop-up cards!
Karen Baicker (Publisher, Family & Community Engagement) organized the event. After spending the morning helping students light up the ERC, she said:
"It was amazing to see 45 fourth graders all intently focused on their projects, and their pride in learning while making (and helping each other when someone got stuck). I was also really thrilled to see our Scholastic volunteers jumping in with hot glue guns, awls, heat strips and more, learning right alongside the kids."
