We're thrilled to have three summer interns in the Corporate Communications team, all of whom will be blogging right here throughout the months ahead. Today we have Ana Aguirre, a design intern currently earning her BFA from Santa Fe University of Art and Design. Ana specializes in motion graphics, typography, and branding, and art plays a big role in her life. Here, she tells us about her Bookprint: the five books that have most affected her life. Share your own in the comments!
I have learned valuable lessons through reading…but also I’ve learned a lot about myself. The five books that have most influenced me in my life have taught me about beauty, art, growing from pain, and pursuing happiness and fulfillment.
Here is my Bookprint:
Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan: The first time I read it was when I was in middle school and then I re-read it when I was in my senior year of high school about to go to an art university, and it taught me some of the most valuable lessons I have learned. There is a scene where Esperanza is having difficulty learning to crochet. Her grandmother unravels all of Esperanza's rows and tells her, "Do not be afraid to start over." As an artist, I’ve needed to start projects over two, three, even four times, but every time I have learned a lesson. Esperanza Rising taught me about not giving up even in the most difficult times, to excel in every single thing I do, and to move on when I feel stuck.
Stitches: A Memoir by David Small: This graphic novel tells the story of Small’s journey from being a cancer patient to the troubled 16-year-old who makes a risky decision to run away from home with the dream of becoming an artist. Stitches goes against the conventional form of biographies by using a graphic novel format. Small tells his story by making the most authentic drawings using only gray tones. The book is gloomy and harsh, but Small taught me how creativity and determination goes a long way. There is truth in the cliché: a picture is worth a thousand words.
Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers by Leonard Koren: This book opened my mind about true beauty and imperfection. A cracked pot, for example, has an essence that a perfectly round pot is lacking; true beauty is in the cracks, the worn spots and in the imperfect lines. It taught me that imperfection is beautiful in every way, and how to embrace and appreciate it. Wabi-sabi is a reminder that nothing in life, design or art is perfect.
Grapefruit: A Book of Instructions and Drawings by Yoko Ono: This book encourages readers to think abstractly, artistically, creatively, and irreverently. Grapefruit opens Yoko Ono’s avant-garde world that is bursting with imagination and then leads you to imagine your own world. Yoko Ono taught me about not taking my art too seriously but have fun and enjoy every moment I practice my craft.
Autobiography of a Face by Lucy Grealy: A story about a girl who has been diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a cancer that severely disfigured her face at age 9, reveals how she dealt with feeling different and ugly. I read this book when my best friend from middle school was going through something similar. Autobiography of a Face taught me about empathy, opening my heart to care about others, to think more about other’s feelings and to always question society’s idea of beauty.
Thanks, Ana!
