Yesterday was an exciting day for Scholastic, as we joined with the United States Postal Service (USPS) to celebrate the launch of National Card and Letter Writing Month (April). As part of the day, the USPS hosted a first day-of-issue dedication ceremony for the new “From Me to You” stamp and announced the new “It’s a Delight to Write” program that has been created together with Scholastic Parent & Child magazine. This month, the new letter writing program is being distributed to 80,000 teachers and 7.3 million parents this month to promote hand-written letter writing in schools and at home.
Dominique Young, Senior Director of Scholastic Family Engagement Group, attended the event at Friendship Public Charter School Woodbridge Campus in Washington D.C. and spoke to an auditorium room filled with 3rd grade students, families, educators and many avid stamp collectors from the library of congress.
Young told the students in attendance, “although we have technology for quick and frequent communication, the art of letter writing should not be lost.” She also challenged the students to send at least 3 letters this month to express their thoughts to a special person or organization.
By show of hands, they all said "yes!".
