That’s a Wrap on Scholastic Summer Read-a-Palooza

Friday, September 4 marked the end of this year's reimagined Scholastic Summer Read-a-Palooza, our free program that celebrates reading for fun while increasing access to books during the summer, without adding additional burdens on parents or caregivers.

With the all-new kids experience in Scholastic Home Base – a free digital destination which offers full books, live events, and games in a moderated and safe online community – participants were able to “check in” every day over the summer to create and maintain Reading StreaksTM. The longer they kept up their Reading Streaks, the more special Read-a-Palooza rewards (like hats, shirts and accessories) they earned – and we are excited to share that kids checked in over 59,000 times this summer! Along with checking in, participants were able to hang out in the new Scholastic Summer Read-a-Palooza Zone, which featured free e-books they could read from authors R.L. Stine, Sayantani DasGupta, Lauren Tarshis, and more!

Along with earning rewards, by keeping Reading Streaks kids also helped give back to others. Through a collaboration with United Way Worldwide, 100,000 new Scholastic print books were donated to 38 areas across the country where access to books is needed most. The more kids checked in, the more donations were unlocked; this year, kids reached the full donation of 100,000 books on July 8 – just halfway through the program!

Kids have until the end of October to download their Reading Report featuring their summer reading accomplishments from Home Base.

With access to public libraries disrupted and many extracurricular camps closed due to the ongoing pandemic, we hope parents, caregivers and educators found the Scholastic Summer Read-a-Palooza program a helpful and encouraging tool this past summer. We will see you next year!
