Our new Math@Work webisode connects math to the culinary arts

Whether it's converting grams to ounces, scaling down a recipe or evaluating the cost of ingredients, there's no denying that math plays a daily role in the life of a chef.

In our latest free Math@Work webisode, Carla Hall, co-host of ABC's The Chew, along with Top Chef Season 11 winner Nicholas Elmi, show three NYC students the math behind the everyday decisions they make in the kitchen.

Carla challenges the students to create healthy dishes that can easily be served in school cafeterias across the country. Along the way, the students solve math problems and discover the links between what they learn at school and the careers they aspire to.

For teachers, we've provided supplementary lesson plans that go along with each of the four math problems represented in the webisode, which support problem solving and developing students' mathematical practices. You can also download the students' recipies!

And one final secret? A certain First Lady of the United States makes an appearance with a special message for students!
