Each Friday, we share a handful of links we found interesting, provocative, funny — or just plain cool. We call it In Our Feeds. Have a good weekend!
In celebration of Harry Potter's birthday yesterday and the conclusion of Harry Potter month (#CelebrateHarry), I am creating a special "In Our Feeds" post for all you Hogwart-philes.
There is a real-life place where the streets are named after Harry Potter. Swing by "Potterville" in Winsdor Park in Missoula, Montana and check it out. Although, I am disappointed it's titled Diagon Lane and not Diagon Alley. You can thank Brittany and Nadia for that fun fact.
This is an interesting read. Does reading Harry Potter make children more tolerant of others? (h/t Melissa). The Journal of Applied Psychology showed in their research that children saw parallels with the book's characters with real-life stigmatized minority groups including: immigrants, refugees and LGBTQ people. Think about it: How many of you were enraged when Draco called Hermione a "mudblood?"
Did you know the Harry Potter series also provided helpful tips to maintaining friendships in your adulthood? Take note, college graduates! Trust me, it only gets harder to make friends as you get older.
Here are few more interesting links that the OOM team could not stop talking about this week:
- Judy Blume talks censorship and YA (h/t Deimosa)
- Cocktails for Book Lovers
- Check out the handwriting of 10 famous typographers
- "We Need Diverse Books" campaign launches a first-ever advisory board
- A dad's guide to snacking in the delivery room (hint: bring snacks)
Enjoy your weekend!
