Every Friday, we share a handful of links that we found funny, provocative or just plain cool. We call it In Our Feeds. Have a great weekend!
With the 4th of July festivities calming down, we're taking some time to catch up on the interesting articles we missed over the holiday weekend. Feel like your "to read" list is a mile long? Me too. But don't worry—the OOMers have curated some of their favorite links to get us started. Happy reading!
- We were deeply saddened to hear of the recent passing of literary legend Walter Dean Myers. Megan shared this lovely piece from The New York Times on his words and works.
- While we're on the topic of the NYT: Did you know that they used a version of the word “underscore” 127 times in the last month alone? (Not that we're counting...). Their compilation of grammar and style missteps can be found here. (h/t Nadia)
- In my feed this week: OOMer Brittany's #throwbackthursday picture from London, taken in front of Platform 9¾! Nadia just got back from vacation in London, where she, too, stopped by Platform 9¾; she might not have made it to Hogwarts, but she managed to take some awesome photos of the National Literacy Trust's "Books about Town" exhibition. We're drooling over these incredible book benches!
- More news out of England: forensics have helped create the world's most lifelike Jane Austen waxwork. (Thanks to Brittany for the link!)
- Should laptops be banned in the clasroom? And is ed tech actually leveling the playing field, or is it, in fact, making achievement gaps even bigger? These are the questions tackled in the articles Deimosa sent over this week.
- Meanwhile, one of our team's summer interns, Melissa, shared this piece on what it looks like when kids all over the world learn how to write.
- A must-watch: This is Teen's "Stuff YA Readers Say" video. (It's totally spot-on!) YA fans will also love the link that Stephanie sent: how to ask someone out using a John Green book. (Oh, and here's scientific proof that readers are the best people to fall in love with.)
Speaking of scientific proof, there was a lil' Ms. Frizzle inspiration in our feeds this week. Megan shared an awesome link to an outfit inspired by the much-loved teacher from The Magic School Bus series.
Have a great weekend!
