OOM gears up for the big game

Although our long list of “to do’s” for this Sunday’s Super Bowl is filled with snacks to buy, guests to invite, and commercials to watch—we also have one task that we think everyone should add to their list—reading! With a great list of Scholastic sporting favorites, what better way to get excited for game day than spending time with your kids reading about their favorite Sunday sport.

Playing in his brother’s home stadium, Family Huddle, written by Peyton Manning is sure to be a winner this Super Bowl season. (Ages 4-8)

This Sunday, star quarterback Peyton Manning is playing in his brother Eli’s home stadium. Family Huddle, written by Eli Manning, Peyton Manning, and their father Archie Manning, with illustrations by Jim Madsen, is sure to be a winner this season. Peyton and Eli Manning are now NFL superstars, but they are still kids in Family Huddle. Follow along as Eli and Peyton pile into the car with older brother Cooper for a trip to visit their grandparents. Their dad, former NFL star Archie Manning, is at the wheel, with mom Olivia at his side. The boys joke around and play football at every opportunity, running fun plays like the buttonhook, the quarterback sneak, and the hook and ladder. Family and football have always been a big deal in the Manning family. Family Huddle is based on some of the Mannings' memories from their days in Louisiana and Mississippi.

Mike Lupica’s Game Chargers: Book 1 is sure to score a touchdown with middle grade readers looking for a cool Super Bowl read. (Ages 8-12)

Ben McBain is every football team's dream player. He's a jack-of-all-trades guy that can handle almost any position. When the game is on the line, Ben's number is the one being called for the final play. But Ben wants to be the starting quarterback and the one thing standing in his way is the coach's son. Shawn O'Brien looks the part. He has been groomed by his father, a former professional quarterback. But despite his size and arm strength, Shawn is struggling. Ben is torn between being a good teammate and going after his own dream. As Ben finds out, Shawn isn't the easiest person to help. And when Ben gets an unexpected opportunity, the entire game will change for the both of them. Bestselling author Mike Lupica kicks off a winning new series about sports and friendship that will captivate readers.

For anyone thinking about playing football both professionally and for fun, John Coy’s novel, Crackback is sure to be an inspiration for all future players. (Ages 12+)

In his gripping debut novel, acclaimed picture book author John Coy presents the high stakes world of high school football, where doing what it takes to win doesn't always mean doing the right thing. When Miles Manning, a successful high school football player, discovers his teammates are using steroids, and one of them is his best friend, he's faced with a tough decision: is he willing to do what it takes to win? Football is his life, and his family, especially his dad, is pinning its hopes on him. It's a lot of pressure for a high school junior to bear. This gripping look into the world of high school boys and athletes--and their struggle to be the best--is provocative and searingly honest.

We’re looking forward to a fun filled weekend with lots of good food, friends, and books!
