With over 100 million reading minutes already logged, kids across the country are taking the pledge to "Power Up & Read" this summer with the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge.
One way kids are enjoying their summer reading this year is grabbing their favorite book and bringing their sleeping bag for special sleepover events at their local planetarium.
In partnership with our annual summer reading challenge, California Academy of Sciences (San Francisco) and The Smithsonian (Washington D.C.) hosted their museum sleepovers featuring materials, books and fun activities supporting this year’s program.
It was the perfect summer reading adventure!
On May 30th, The Smithsonian: National Museum of American History took 200 kids on an American history adventure with its “Smithsonian Sleepovers” in Washington, D.C. Here are some hilarious "overheard" moments of the event including fun activities and crafts.
Last Friday, 300 kids enjoyed an evening with their feathered friends at California Academy of Sciences' “Penguins + Pajamas" in San Francisco. Books and penguins! Who could ask for anything more?
Here are more events coming up - including tonight in the Chicago-area.
- Adler Planetarium “Astro-Overnights” (Chicago, IL, June 12)
- Milwaukee Public Museum “Museum Overnights” (Milwaukee, WI, June 19)
- The Smithsonian: National Museum of American History “Smithsonian Sleepovers” (Washington, D.C., July 18)
Scholastic will provide books including The Magic School Bus: The Electric Field Trip and nonfiction books about science careers and experiments, Scholastic SuperScience magazines and posters, Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge activity sheets, reading certificates and more at these events to encourage kids to read all summer long.
