Today, the latest title from award-winning authors and speakers Kylene Beers and Bob Probst, which is a culmination of their life’s research and teaching, is now available: Forged by Reading: The Power of a Literate Life
Following the success of Disrupting Thinking, Beers and Probst are back with a new book that urges readers to consider the critical role literacy has in supporting a healthy democracy and what it actually means to live a literate life.
“What if our first vision of reading is that reading empowers children to become all they can be so they can forge a better life for themselves, their community, and their democracy?,” they ask.
The authors explain the responsibility we have as readers to decide what ideas shape us. They discuss pressing topics such as inclusive libraries, student identity, anti-racism, and strategies that will help students think deeply about text. They also encourage readers to contemplate the history of power and suppression as it relates to literacy, and offer a renewed outlook for what it means to be and cultivate independent readers.
Forged by Reading is a call to action for educators and families. This book is about creating readers who think, who live an empowered life, who live a self-determined life shaped by evidence and reason, vision, and imagination.
While the book is written and dedicated to teachers, anyone can connect to its core message: that living a literate life is powerful.
In Forged by Reading, Beers and Probst write:
“Now, right now, our discussion as a nation needs to be about how reading and writing offer students the power to change themselves and perhaps the world around them.”
