New Book From Dr. Linda C. Mayes: The Educator’s Guide to Understanding Child Development

Scholastic has released a new professional book, The Educator’s Guide to Understanding Child Development: Supporting Healthy Academic and Emotional Growth, by Dr. Linda C. Mayes, the Arnold Gesell Professor of Child Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Psychology; Chair of the Yale Child Study Center; and steering committee member of the Yale Child Study Center + Scholastic Collaborative for Child and Family Resilience.

This book is based on Dr. Mayes’ previously published title The Yale Child Study Center Guide to Understanding Your Child, an essential resource for families offering accessible information on child development grounded in deep brain research and psychology, which has now been distilled to help inform educators’ practice with a solid foundation in child development.

The Educator’s Guide to Understanding Child Development details how child development is a rich mix of physical, cognitive, social and emotional growth. While children make progress at their own pace, this title will help educators of grades pre-K–3 support students on their individual paths with more insight and confidence, while also being able to offer support and guidance to parents and caregivers.

Dr. Mayes’ reassuring approach helps educators understand troubles that may arise and strategies for addressing them, including when and where to go for help with concerns such as learning disabilities, bullying, sibling rivalry, depression, anger and other difficult feelings.

Dr. Mayes says, “Our goal is to give educators the background knowledge and insights behind the alchemy by which an infant transforms into the child who graces your classroom, bursting with personality. The Educator’s Guide to Understanding Child Development seeks not only to help you understand each child and his or her development from birth but also goes further to explore how you support their parents and understand yourself as a teacher. The insights from this book will help inform your teaching practice as you gain greater knowledge of a child’s cognitive and emotional development.”
