There's something about a big red dog -- er, I mean carpet -- that gets me excited! This Sunday, I'll be watching (and tweeting) the Academy Awards, one of the biggest events for movie-lovers. Sure, I'll be looking at the gowns (and the gaffes) but, thanks to my friends from Scholastic Education, I'll also be looking at the numbers.
Turns out there's some serious math going on behind the scenes. The Education group put together some great #mathattheoscars prompts -- perfect if you'll be watching with your kids and want to sneak in some math! For example:
- Here are some numbers to prep you for Sunday's Oscars: there are 24 categories, 124 nominations, and 10 Best Picture Nominees. A quick exercise to tackle at home could be, How can we measure the odds of winning?
- Speaking of odds, many people participate in just-for-fun Oscar ballots with their friends and family. The statistics behind who will win are fascinating...and highly mathematical. Check out these Oscar predictions from a Harvard applied math major!
- Fun fact: did you know the Oscars red carpet is 500 feet long and 33 feet wide? Why not see if your kids can calculate the area of the carpet?
Who are you rooting for?
