Journey to the Bottom of the Sea

Today, we have a guest post from Jen Barone, a Scholastic editor at Science World magazine. Jen is on an incredible adventure that may take her to the bottom of the ocean! Read on to learn more about Jen's trip, and if you are a teacher, don't miss the cool giveaway opportunity at the end of the post!

Ever wondered what it’s like to explore the deep sea? We’re about to find out!

I’m Jen, from Scholastic’s Science World. This week, I set sail with a team of scientists and engineers who’ll be using the submersible Alvin to explore the ocean floor. If I’m lucky, I might even get a chance to dive in Alvin myself!

Alvin is operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Engineers there spent three years taking the sub apart, redesigning it, and rebuilding it to be better than ever. The brand-new Alvin was unveiled just in time for the sub’s 50th birthday this year. I can’t wait to see it in action.

You can follow along with our ocean adventures at Science World as well as on @ScholasticTeach. If you or your students have questions about the expedition, Alvin, or life at sea, please send them my way. You can reach us in the comments below, via email to JenAtSea@scholastic.com, or by using hashtag #JenAtSea. I'll tackle as many as I can, with a little help from my expert shipmates.

Teacher Giveaway: Have a class that can't get enough ocean facts? We're giving one teacher and his/her class the chance to video chat with Jen when she returns from her ocean adventure! She'll share her experiences and answer questions about what it's like to live and work on a research vessel. You'll also get a one-year subscription to Science World!

To enter, send an email to jenatsea@scholastic.com with the subject line "Jen at Sea Giveaway." Please include your full name, address, and phone number.
