Be sure to check out our Scholastic Reading Club Editor's "top picks" all this week - including a special book picks list for older kids, as well as a "teacher top picks" list.

All of these great picks are currently available in special Holiday Gift Books flyer from Scholastic Reading Club  - featuring great picks for Hanukkah (I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Dreidel), Christmas (The First Christmas Night), Kwanzaa (K is for Kwanzaa) and more.

From Book Box Daily - "Holiday Picks for Young Children"

We recently heard the rhymed suggestion that children should have four categories covered when it comes to holiday gifts:

A gift they want

A gift they need

A gift to wear

A gift to read

We’re not qualified to say what the children in your life should wear, might need, or want, but we can make some suggestions about books!

Here are some of the picks from our editorial team for young listeners and budding readers on your list.

Laura Bryn suggests these wonderful books:

  • With twelve fantastic board books, the Honeybee Board Book Mega Pack lets toddlers unwrap the gift of reading together on each of the twelve days of Christmas!
  • I remember poring over Jan Brett’s gorgeously illustrated stories every Christmas with my mother, and now The Animals’ Santa is brand-new in paperback! It’s the perfect holiday gift for a new generation of Jan Brett fans.

Kate offers up these ideas:

  • Every Christmas Eve we sing carols at my aunt and uncles  but this year I plan to read aloud Frozen: Olaf’s Night Before Christmas.
  • Celebrating the holidays is a special time of the year but it can be exhausting! When you need a break from all the excitement (and a few laughs) pick up a copy of Elephant and Piggie: I Will Take a Nap!
  • I received my first Harry Potter book on Christmas morning over 10 years ago. This year I can’t wait to introduce my nephew to Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: Illustrated Edition for a special family read-aloud.

Heather had thoughts for family gifts:

  • This year I’m doing my best to spread as much joy and happiness as I can—so I’m bringing a copy of Happy! By Pharrell Williams to every holiday party I attend!
  • It’s the 40th anniversary of Tomie DePaola’s Strega Nona, so I’ll be sharing the original story and Merry Christmas, Strega Nona with my nieces before we celebrate the Feast of the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve.

What board books, picture books, and read-alouds would you suggest for the readers in your life? Let us know in the comments below!
