Hidden wisdom from an egg-carton

With 60 and 70 degree days here in New York City, it feels like spring has finally arrived! To celebrate, we have for you a great guest post by Alicia Mitchell – a new member of the Scholastic Education team – about how she found inspiration in this springtime craft from Instructor Magazine online.

One of the first lessons I learned as the new print and web promotions coordinator for Scholastic Education was developing an open and free mind. Not only does this mindset encourage flexibility in business, it’s a necessity for success.

Similar to detox programs jump-starting your body for a healthier lifestyle, I was in need of creative cleanse granting my imagination freedom to roam.

Coming across an Instructor Magazine video demonstration on recycled egg-carton flowers, I knew this eco-friendly craft project was worth an earnest try. Aside from already having a majority of the materials at home, this innovative activity looked fun.

Ideally intended for young artists, I watched the video on repeat.  The more I watched, the more apprehensive I became. Many, many years have passed since I last painted, used scissors or secured anything with pipe cleaners. Verbally committing to pick up a paintbrush was a feat in itself.  Whether I failed or flourished, I was making these flowers!

With a few friends on a Friday night, we created our own one-of-a-kind springtime bouquet. Large moments of time flew by without a single word exchanged between each other. We were lost in creativity with our heads, hearts and hands determining the colorful fate of each flower.

I am very pleased with the final results, which are proudly displayed in a vase at my desk. Reminiscent of spring weather, the flower arrangement adds very energizing pops of color, warmth and a welcoming ambiance to my new office space.

What a great way to commemorate my first month at Scholastic. Any time I need a creative refresher, I’ll turn to these egg-carton beauties for instant and endless inspiration.
