Mother’s Day is just around the corner! In addition to honoring the mothers in our own lives, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite literary mothers!
- Mrs. Bennet (Pride and Prejudice): She may be overbearing and brutally honest (especially when it comes to seeing her daughters get married), but we have no doubt Mrs. Bennet only wants the best for her girls.
- Marmee March (Little Women): Marmee runs the household when Father March is with the Union Army during the Civil War. She raises 4 daughters and guides them through tough times.
- Maura Sargent (The Raven Boys): "‘I should tell you,’ Maura always advised her new clients, ‘that this reading will be accurate, but not specific.’” Blue’s clairvoyant mother is a fascinating character, and not just because she’s a psychic! She tries to protect her daughter (she tells Blue that if she kisses her true love, he would die) but ultimately gives Blue the freedom to just be a teenager.
- Mrs. Prior (Divergent): Mrs. Prior is supportive of Tris’s decision to switch from Abnegation to the Dauntless faction. She is particularly important at the end of Divergent, but I don’t want to give any spoilers here!
Mothers don’t have to be biological to be important in a character’s life.
- Mrs. Weasley (Harry Potter) – In addition to being the mother of 7 wizard children, running the household, and knitting sweaters for everyone, she’s an active member of The Order of the Phoenix (both times!) Harry becomes like a son to her, and her love is the only maternal affection knows since his own mother, Lily Potter, dies when Harry is a baby.
- Levi’s Mother (Better Off Friends): Macallen’s mother dies in a car accident. When she becomes friends with Levi, his mother becomes a mother figure in her life, helping her and guiding her through those tough pre-teen years.
Of course, we have to give a shout out to grandmothers too:
- Grandma Mimi (The Baby-Sitters Club): How could you not love Grandma Mimi? She’s so full of love, patience, and understanding! No wonder Claudia is so close with her. (Take a look at the image from the graphic novel edition of The Baby-Sitters Club: Claudia and Mean Janine!)
- Grace Cahill (The 39 Clues): She changes her will to offer family a choice of one million dollars or a clue…so I’d definitely categorize her as a mysterious character! Still, her love for her family, especially her grandchildren Amy and Dan, is undeniable.
Happy Mother’s Day to all our favorite moms – real and fictional! Who did we miss? Let us know in the comments below.
