Did you know today marks Andy Warhol's birthday? Today we're remembering his legacy which he created by challenging the way the public thinks about art, celebrity culture and advertising. He worked in a wide range of art forms from drawing to sculpture, music to film, and more. So many of his works are immediately recognizable - can you say Marilyn Monroe or Campbell's Soup? In fact, the Campbell's Soup can is larger than life this summer as part of the Art Everywhere campaign in select cities. Similar to the Scholastic Art & Writing Award winner Steven Paul's mural in Brooklyn we've mentioned, the soup can will be in LA. You can learn more by reading the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers' blog post.
Do you know what else Steven and Andy have in common? They both won a Scholastic Art & Writing Award while in high school. While Steven may have just gained his gold key this past year, Andy received his in 1945 when he was 17 for a painting. At the time he was a senior at Schenley High School in Pittsburgh, PA. Inspiring, huh? To think of all the potential of teen artists or writers and how encouragement in the right direction can lead to exciting opportunities and contributions to our culture. So talented teens everywhere, keep creating! And if you want to walk in Andy and Steven's footprints, submit to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards beginning September 15th.
