Cultivating a culture of family engagement

Now more than ever teachers are looking for parents to be their partners in learning. As research has shown, parent involvement in a student’s academic career can have a significant impact on the child’s attendance, academic achievement and overall attitude about school.

As mentioned here, there are many things parents can do with their children at home to promote literacy. From talking to children about their school day to being a reading role model, no action is too small of a starting point.

However, in order to cultivate a strong culture of family engagement, schools need provide families with the support and materials needed to extend learning beyond the school day. To encourage family involvement the Scholastic Family and Community Engagement (FACE) team created a new program, Literacy Events, to help schools and communities engage families and students (grades pre-K–5) by providing them with take-home books accompanied by texted based activities.

This past weekend, as part of their yearly volunteer project, the Scholastic FACE team traveled to Los Angeles, CA to host a Literacy Events day for 21 families of Braddock Elementary. For more information about family engagement, visit our education blog, frizzle.
