Once again, we did some browsing in the Scholastic archive, and found some classics from the 1980s and 1990s, to reflect on what scared us back in the 20th century - check them out!
His Dark Materials author Philip Pullman penned this novella for Arthur A. Levine Books in 1998, the same year that Scholastic’s AAL imprint published the first Harry Potter:
Newbery medalist Rodman Philbrick penned The House on Cherry Street series, also in the 1990s, with wife Lynn Harnett, a book reviewer and a fellow author:
Love the hairstyles and the subtitles from the 1980s Windswept series:
In the 1990s subtitles, raised lettering and a sinister font added drama to YA Thrillers:
And finally, here are some pop-up books produced by the Orchard Books imprint - 1998's Eerie Feary Feeling and 2000's Monster Train:
You're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but certain styles definitely lead to nostalgia. Working in the archive it is always exciting to find something you've never seen before - or just plain forgot about!
