Here at Scholastic, we have been counting down the minutes until “Shark Week” and are so excited that it is finally here! Normally, I am terrified of sharks and most sea animals, but once a year I put aside my fear and join in on the fun. As a longstanding tradition I visit the New England Aquarium with a group of friends. We usually wear shark themed outfits which includes goofy foam shark hats (you’d be amazed at how many people dress up!) while we check out the creepy sharks, eels, and fish. This year I will be unable to make it to Boston, so what better way to celebrate Shark Week than with some of Scholastic’s Shark Week themed books?
Check out the books below that are perfect for “Shark Week” and readers of all ages!
Fly Guy Presents: Sharks
By Tedd Arnold (Ages 4-8)
Award-winning author/illustrator Tedd Arnold brings nonfiction to life with the help of his very popular main character, Fly Guy. This engaging nonfiction reader combines the kid-friendly humor of Fly Guy with the high-interest topic of sharks. Fly Guy and Buzz introduce young readers to sharks with straightforward fun facts, humorous asides, and full-bleed photographs throughout.
Scholastic Discover More Stickers: Sharks
By Lauren Brown (Ages 6-8)
Sharks are the perfect topic for this original, irreverent mix. Circle stranded pirates with great white sharks, create rows and rows of shark teeth, decorate menus at the Shark Cafe, and fill a coral reef with sharks to frighten all the sea creatures. All the facts are here—from different kinds of sharks to their super senses and amazing hunting abilities—but you’ll be too busy scaring surfers to notice how much you’re learning.
I Survived #2: I Survived the Shark Attack of 1916
By Lauren Tarshis (Ages 8-12)
This second installment and the exciting middle-grade series by Lauren Tarshis brings the summer of 1916 alive with headlines from the Jersey shore: A great white shark has been attacking and killing swimmers not far from 10-year-old protagonist Chet Roscow’s hometown beach. Readers will be captivated by Chet’s story and his confrontation with the jaws of real life.
Surrounded By Sharks
By Michael Northrop (Ages 12 and Up)
Dragged out to sea with nothing but a piece of trash to keep him afloat, Davey is certain things can’t get any worse...and then he spots a shark. He couldn’t sleep. That's how it all started. When Davey wakes, just as the sun is rising, he can’t wait to slip out of the crammed hotel room he’s sharing with his family. Leave it to his parents and kid brother to waste an entire day of their vacation sleeping in! Davey heads for the beach, book and glasses in hand, not bothering to leave a note. As the sparkling ocean entices him, he decides he will just test the water. Never mind that “No Swimming” sign. But when the waves pull him farther and farther out to sea, Davey finds himself surrounded not only by water, but something else—something circling below the surface.
