Schools play a vital role in ensuring all students are provided with adequate lunches during school hours.
However, the House of Representatives is discussing plans to lower the quality of foods children are provided during the school day. One of those changes would give schools the option to serve fruits and vegetable. Although fresh produce may come with a larger price tag, investing in our student’s wellbeing is priceless.
According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, eating the right food promotes optimal growth and development of children. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend a diet rich in fruit and vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free and low-fat dairy products for persons aged 2 and older.
