Alan Rickman, actor who played Severus Snape, passes away at age 69

In the Harry Potter series, Snape is a complicated character. We hate him, we love him, we hate him. And in the end, we realize the lengths he went to to protect Harry. He may not be the nicest of men or the biggest fan of Harry's, but he is redeemed.

This morning we awoke to the news that Alan Rickman, who perfectly portrayed Snape in all of the Harry Potter movies, had passed away. Our thoughts are with his family.

This morning, J.K. Rowling shared her thoughts about his passing:

And Daniel Radcliffe, who portrayed Harry, shared a statement.

Some of our own favorite Snape moments include:

  • "His dry, biting one-liners...Snape was a great foil to Potter." (Mike)
  • "This entire quote from book 1 is hilarious: 'You are here to learn the subtle science and exact art of potion-making…As there is little foolish wand-waving here, many of you will hardly believe this is magic. I don't expect you will really understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through human veins, bewitching the mind, ensnaring the senses…I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death—if you aren't as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach.'" (Julia)
  • "This gif of Snape giving Ron a smack will never not make me laugh!" (Gina)
  • "I love when he says, "Mr. Potter. Our new celebrity." in Sorcerer's Stone. (Megan)
  • "The way he enters his classroom like a boss." (Deimosa)

We leave you with this, a scene from "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2," that beautifully illustrates what a talented actor Alan Rickman was, and how perfectly suited he was to play the role of Snape.
