Thanksgiving is upon us! It's the time of year when we take a collective step back to ponder the many things we're thankful for. The list is a long a varied one, and while it may not be the most obivous item to add, at Scholastic, we're thankful for books. Books provide us with so much—adventures to dive into, characters to connect with, stories that make us laugh, shock us, teach us, and stay with us as we grow older.
I always tell people that are three things my parents did while my siblings and I were growing up that I am immensly thankful for: they made us play outside every day (no matter the weather), they made us have dinner together in some capacity as often as we could, and they made reading a priority. Reading was ubiquitous in my household; my parents often read aloud to us at night, they read their own books or newspapers after dinner, they talked with each other about the books they were reading and how they felt about them, and they encouraged us to read alone whenever and wherever we could.
I am thankful for so many books—books I read in school, books my family passed down to me, books I've discovered on my own, but I am most thankful for my parents insistence that we read every day.
Why are you thankful for books? And what books are you thankful for most? We'd love to hear your reasons and to learn what books you cherish. Share your thoughts with us on social media at #thankfulforbooks all week long!
