Did you know that today is National Hammock Day? You may wonder why such a seemingly random holiday constitutes a blog post, but here at Scholastic, we take things like this very seriously. See, a hammock is one of the many lovely places one can read a book (in fact, I'd argue a hammock is maybe one of the best places to read a book) therefore we feel strongly that it deserves some attention. That said, I've asked our blog team to list their favorite book to read in a hammock. Not on a park bench, not on the beach, in a hammock. See below for some wonderfully relaxing (and maybe some snooze-worthy) reads.
Stephanie A. chose Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. "It's a light read and a children’s literary classic. Reading this story while lounging in a hammock, the reader can easily get lost in a wonderland of their own."
Stephanie S. chose The Vacationers by Emma Straub. "I read it last weekend and it was the perfect read for summer as it was light and dreamy but had a good amount of drama in it. Read it on a blanket but wish I had a hammock!"
Deimosa suggests Summer Sisters, by Judy Blume, and An Abundance of Katherines, by John Greene. Our librarian, Karen, says the last thing she read in a hammock was 2030 by Albert Brooks. It made her laugh so hard she thought the hammock was going to tip over.
Morgan picked Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter because it's "super beachy and captivating."
Brittany said she remembers reading Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen while sailing in the Virgin Islands. "It was the perfect classic summer read!"
Mike B suggests a biography/autobiography. "If you happen to fall asleep in the hammock," he said, "you can easily pick-up without forgetting plot points. I am currently reading about choreographer Bob Fosse, titled Fosse by Sam Wasson."
Lia loves reading anything summer-themed in the hammock. "A personal favorite? The Baby-sitters Club Super Specials! (esp. #2: Baby-sitters’ Summer Vacation!)"
Suzanne chose War and Peace (perhaps because it'll make you fall asleep....?)
What about you?
