We recently announced the 2014 Scholastic READ 180 and System 44 All-Star Award winners, 13 amazing students in grades 5–12 who overcame obstacles to achieve remarkable reading gains. With the help of their dedicated teachers and the reading intervention programs READ 180 and System 44 these students from across the country have beat the odds, putting aside their academic and personal challenges to become successful students on the path to college and career readiness.
Throughout the past few weeks, READ 180 and System 44 All-Stars have been making headlines, sharing their inspirational stories of reading success with local and national audiences.
Check out this recent television segment from KIMA-TV in Yakima, Washington to learn more about Lisette Cortes, a 7th grade READ 180 All-Star who began her reading journey two years ago as a timid student reading on a first grade level. Today, Lisette reads on an 8th grade level and has become a leader at home by helping her siblings with schoolwork. Next year, she will go on to serve as a school mentor to incoming 6th-graders.
Yakima student recognized nationally for reading improvement
Over in El Paso, Texas, 7th grade READ 180 All-Star Jose Feliciano spoke with KFOX14 about how the READ 180 program has changed his reading abilities. Just a few months ago, Jose was a student whose reading scores were holding him back from succeeding in all his classes and dragging down his self-confidence. But all that has changed since the beginning of his seventh grade year. He has already gained the equivalent of two years in his reading skills in this school year and this newfound success has boosted his confidence, helped him become more self-reliant in class and transformed him into a leader.
