With more than 255,000 submissions of original art and writing, the 2014 Scholastic Awards attracted more participants than ever before! To celebrate the achievements of these young artists and writers, National Medalists will be honored at the world-famous Carnegie Hall for our National Ceremony on June 6!
For those unfamiliar with the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the Awards have recognized the original voice of our nation’s most creative teens for more than 90 years. It is the most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S. in grades 7-12, and the nation’s largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers. Each year, filmmakers, photographers, poets, writers, and sculptors are acknowledged for their outstanding artistic efforts. Alumni of the program include artists Andy Warhol, Philip Pearlstein, and Kay WalkingStick; writers Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Stephen King, and Joyce Carol Oates; actors Frances Farmer, Robert Redford, Alan Arkin, and John Lithgow; filmmakers Stan Brakhage and Ken Burns; and many more.
On June 6, we will be joined by Alumni Achievement Award recipient Kay WalkingStick as we honor National Awards winners from across the country and recognize the achievement and commitment of educators, friends, and supporters who help make the Awards possible.
Because of the overwhelming response we received from so many of you who joined us for the National Ceremony webcast for our 90th Anniversary, we are excited to be able to share this electrifying event via live webcast for you again this year! Whether you’re a few blocks away, or three time zones away, we hope you will join us for the 2014 National Ceremony Webcast on June 6 at 6:00 p.m. EST/3:00 p.m. PST.

We’ve created a toolkit overflowing with fun tips and ideas to make planning a local event a success, no matter how large or small. This will be my third National Ceremony with the Awards, and each year I overwhelmed with happiness. I spend the year getting to know these students through their work, artist statements, and video greetings, which are short recordings explaining their feelings about art, writing, and what inspires them most. When I finally get to meet these incredible students and their uncompromisingly supportive families, I find myself looking forward to our future. The future of the arts, the future of creativity, and more importantly, I look forward to what they will accomplish in their bright futures. While I may not make it through the Ceremony with dry eyes, I doubt I will be the only one overcome with pride and joy.
We hope you can join us in celebrating the creative teens in our nation. The live webcast is sure to inspire and showcase the power of creativity.
