Members of the Scholastic Educations Solutions team were proud to join NABU, a nonprofit organization dedicated to solving the global literacy crisis by providing every child with equitable access to literacy resources by 2030, in helping to teach the first class of Creative Fellows.
During the event, which was held in Miami, FL, Scholastic representatives, Michael Haggen, Tom Martinez, Janet Reed, Jerusha Saldaña Yañez, and Malcom Alexis, spoke with the 2023 Summer Fellows – storytellers and artists of Haitian descent – about the book creation process behind children’s novels for ages two through six.
Through mentorship provided by the Scholastic, NABU Creative Fellows will help to create more bilingual Haitian Creole children’s books, and learn behind-the-scenes details of the book development process from start to finish – with an emphasis on ensuring every story’s cultural identity is accurately portrayed.
“We’re so pleased to have met and presented to an incredible group of budding authors and artists through NABU’s Creative Fellowship,” Michael Haggen, Senior Vice President, General Manager, Scholastic Literacy Pro® & Collections, Scholastic Education Solutions said. “We couldn’t be more excited for their bright futures, and are hoping some of the books created through this fellowship will become part of the PreK offering for The New Worlds Reading Initiative.”
