Scholastic Kids Press is now accepting Kid Reporter applications for the 2020–2021 program year. Applicants must be between the ages of 10–14. (Sorry adults!) However, if you know a student who is eligible, and interested in reporting “news for kids, by kids,” encourage them to apply!
Students interested in applying must submit a personal essay about why they want to be a Kid Reporter, a news article, and two story ideas with their application. All applications must be received by May 31, 2020.

In the past year, 50 Kid Reporters from across the country and around the world reported on global current events and local news including stories about entertainment, the environment, sports, and more. They wrote about the Taal Volcano eruption in the Philippines, the celebration of the 150th anniversary of women’s suffrage in Wyoming, and sea turtle conservation efforts in Florida. They also interviewed author and activist Alyssa Milano, American figure skaters Alysa Liu and Nathan Chen, Captain Underpants and Dog Man creator Dav Pilkey, and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Millie Bobby Brown.
This year, Scholastic Kid Reporters have also been on the campaign trail, getting an inside look at the 2020 United States presidential election to share with students nationwide. Their coverage of this election year is a continuation of the program’s 20-year history of capturing important interviews with voters, youth activists, volunteers, lawmakers, and presidential candidates focused on the issues that matter most to kids.
