It’s almost time to say goodbye to 2019! To celebrate the last 12 months, the Scholastic Book Clubs team compiled a list of some of the most interesting and creative contests they held in 2019, and gave us a special sneak peak of some exciting Clubs contests coming up in 2020.

The Kid Spy Story Contest—February 2019
In this contest, students in grades 2 & 3 teamed up with friends to write and illustrate the first three pages of an original story about a kid who’s secretly a spy! Lane N., Slyvia K., and Ava H. from Pennsylvania won the grand prize: a class visit with the creators of the Mac B. Kid Spy series—Mac Barnett and Mike Lowery.
Lunch for Your Teachers’ Lounge Contest— February 2019
For this particular contest, Scholastic Apple Teachers were asked to share their favorite teaching moment from the school year. Jessica Urbay, a Gifted Teacher from Felix A. Elementary, and Adrienne Crowe, a 4th grade teacher from Dallastown Area Intermediate School, were selected from nearly 1,000 applications and each received a catered lunch for their school’s entire teaching staff!
The Pigeon’s Birthday Party Contest— October 2019
Happy 16th BIRD-day to the Pigeon book series! Students from Pre-K through first grade were asked to write and/or draw an invitation for a costume party at their school in celebration of Pigeon’s birthday. The lucky winner of the contest was Gracie F. from Pennsylvania, whose class received a Pigeon Birthday Party complete with costumes, special guests, and a special present for every child!
“Who Is?” Create-a-Cover Contest— November 2019
This contest gave students the chance to make themselves the subject of their very own Who Is? book. Participants created a front cover and a back cover that included a short description of the book. Students in grades 2 through 6 participated, and the 10 winners chosen were: Grace S., NJ; William R., MA; August K., GA; Misha P., GA; Sukriti V., MN; Johnny S., RI; Kate T., MN; Jackson N., PA; Sophia L., CA; and Allison B., VA. All winners received a Who Is? Library and art supplies.
The Max Einstein STEM Program Scholarship contest— November 2019
In this contest, students were tasked with the mission of coming up with an idea that involves using science and technology to make the world a better place, and then explaining their idea in two pages or less. The grand prize? $5000 in covered tuitions and fees for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) related programs! Congrats to grand prize winner Ian H. 6th grader from Pennsylvania! Additionally, the ten runners up in the contest were also awarded with two James Patterson sponsored Libraries for their schools.

My #DoGood Classroom Sweepstakes
In celebration of author-illustrator Dav Pilkey’s international Do Good tour, Scholastic Book Clubs is asking teachers of grades 2–5 how they and their students have made a difference in their community. Teachers are encouraged to submit pictures and include a description, as well as their thoughts on how their project impacted their students and others within the community. The winner of this contest will receive a school visit in early spring 2020 from Dav Pilkey himself, and every student in the school will receive signed Dav Pilkey books!

Rescue Animals Writing Contest
This contest will give students in grades 3–5 the chance to create an original story with a rescue animal as the protagonist. Ten winners will be selected and their stories will be published on the Scholastic Book Clubs very own website! Winners will also be awarded with $50 worth of supplies to either benefit their own rescue pet or donate to a local shelter, as well as two Rescue Hero Libraries—one for the winner and one for their classroom.

My Favorite Story Writing Contest
In this contest, Scholastic Book Clubs wants to see the stories that students in grades 5–8 had most fun writing. Five winners will be selected and will receive 10 books of their choice plus a signed letter from author Gordon Korman. Additionally, the five winners will have their stories published on the Scholastic Book Clubs website!

My Graphic Novel Character Contest
This contest asks students in grades 2 through –3 to create their very own original graphic novel character. Their character should be illustrated and have a name and three personality traits. Five winners will be chosen, and each will receive a collection of art and writing supplies, plus a Graphic Novel Library!

Happy Valentine’s Day, Book BFF! Contest
In this holiday-themed contest, kids in grades PreK–1 are invited to make a Valentine’s Day card for their favorite book character. The card can include artwork as well as a message to the character. Five winners will be chosen and will received an “I Love Reading” Library and $75 worth of art supplies.

Doug the Pug Paw-some Cover Contest
Students in grades 4–8 are invited to create a photographic or illustrative book cover in the style of Doug the Pug’s books, featuring their own favorite animals. 10 winners will be selected and will receive a personal pawtographed copy of Doug the Pug: Food For Thought; a Doug the Pug plush; class sets of I Am Doug the Pug and Doug the Pug: Food for Thought; and will have their artwork featured on Doug the Pug's social media accounts.

Invent Your Own Holiday Contest
Scholastic Book Clubs knows that every community has its amazing heroes and important events! That’s why they developed a contest for kids in grades K–6 to invent their own holiday that celebrates something or someone that has made a big difference in their community. Students can create everything from the name of their holiday and special foods, to the colors, images, or customs associated with the holiday. Three Grand-Prize Winners will be selected and receive a party celebrating THEIR holiday in their classroom!
