Manager, Brand Publicity

The brand publicity manager will develop and implement innovative publicity plans and campaigns for key authors and brands. Working closely with the brand publicity and marketing teams and reporting to VP Brand Publicity and Franchise Strategy, the ideal candidate must be skilled in pitching and securing national media, and experience in digital and social media is preferred.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing innovative publicity plans and campaigns for key authors and brands
  • Creating press materials and securing media interviews
  • Developing and executing buzz-worthy author events and tours
  • Creating and maintaining targeted media lists, including social media influencers
  • Collaborating with key brand partners and licensors
  • Proactively identifying new hooks for key authors/titles

How you can fit:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a strong interest in children’s books. 
  • The ability to work well under pressure, meet tight deadlines and multi-task. 
  • Strong organizational and research skills and attention to detail. 
  • A minimum of 4-6 years of PR experience and a B.A. required. 
  • Experience in social media platforms preferred, and knowledge of children’s books a plus. 

The position also requires the following: 

  • Experience writing press releases and pitch letters.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment. 
  • Experience interacting directly with authors and media.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work independently. 
  • Some people management experience.
  • Familiarity with media databases such as Cision and Publicity Assistant a plus.

Production Manager

The production manager for cross-channel licensing manages the cost estimating, scheduling and production of the school market publication lists. This includes the management of two assistant production coordinators, a reprints temp, and two freelance copyeditors.

Responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing the conversion of an outside publisher's work to a Scholastic branded version of the title
  • Managing the schedules for different product types ensuring that target dates are met and deadlines are communicated to the editorial, manufacturing, production, and design teams
  • Collaborating with the manufacturing group to set priorities and coordinate schedules, establish standards, institute and streamline internal and external workflows
  • Liasing with outside vendors/publishers/authors as necessary to answer questions, traffic materials, and resolve ad hoc issues

Assistant or Associate Editor, Choices magazine

Choices, an award-winning health, like skills, and social-emotional learning magazine for teens published by Scholastic, is searching for a highly creative assistant or associate editor (title depends on experience) with exceptional writing abilities and digital know-how. This is your dream job if you care deeply about young people, empathize with all of the critical issues they face, and feel driven to put substantive, compelling stories that matter into the world.

Responsibilities include: 

  • Writing and/or editing four pages of the magazine each month
  • Attending all editorial meetings as an integral part of the lineup creation and art direction processes
  • Editing monthly Teacher's Guide and overseeing all web-based and printable teaching resources, from conception to final product

Publicist, Corporate Communications

The Publicist within the Scholastic Corporate Communications department is based in New York and reports to the Communications Manager to support earned media and thought leadership initiatives as well as general communication and organizational needs within the department. Under the leadership of the Manager, the Publicist will support communications planning and execution that will generate ongoing positive publicity for various divisions and corporate initiatives within Scholastic. 

Responsibilities include: 

  • With the Manager, meet with internal “clients” in various divisions of Scholastic to gather information, participate in long-term planning, and make recommendations for creating media opportunities
  • Research and vet incoming media inquiries
  • Contribute to program-related brainstorms which can include pitch ideas, social media content, internal communications, etc.
  • Write first draft materials and incorporate feedback as provided. These materials can include but are not limited to media pitches, backgrounders, talking points, program update memos, etc.

Principal Data Engineer

Scholastic is seeking a Principal Data Engineer to lead ongoing development of the Scholastic Data Cloud (SDC). The candidate will demonstrate a successful track record of thought leadership and management skills coupled with deep experience engineering and managing cloud-based data platforms. The ideal candidate will be distinguished not only by their experience working in a cloud-based, multi-tenant environment, but also by high levels of creativity, passion and thought leadership.  

Responsibilities include: 

  • Lead the Scholastic Data Cloud (SDC) development effort focusing on scalability, quality and performance 
  • Manage a team of data engineers located both on and off shore 
  • Serve as the organization’s expert on SDC platform technologies and architecture 
  • Perform employee performance reviews and regular one-on-one sessions 
  • Perform code reviews
