We know that in some parts of the country, schools are already gearing up for back-to-school, but while the last weeks of summer wind down, it’s still the perfect time to help students discover the joy of reading and make a “summer leap” in literacy skills for the new school year!
So how can you engage children in summer reading? In the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report™: 6th Edition we asked U.S. parents about their attitudes and behaviors around reading, and they shared that taking children to the library is the top way they encourage reading over the summer. Similarly, educators surveyed in the Teacher & Principal School Report revealed that the library is the number one source of access to books for kids over the summer.
Principals, teachers, and parents agree that local libraries can be powerful partners while school is out—providing free access to books and digital resources, in addition to fun events for the entire family.
