Are you an educator looking for inspiration for your summer reading book list?
Scholastic Professional has just released a new title for educators of striving readers in grades 1–8: The Next Step Forward in Reading Intervention: The RISE Framework
Renowned K–12 educator and professional development consultant, leading expert in guided reading, and respected author Jan Richardson, Ph.D., and reading teacher and literacy consultant Ellen Lewis, M.Ed. have combined their Reading Recovery® expertise and firsthand classroom experience to present the RISE (Reading Intervention for Students to Excel) framework, a step-by-step resource for providing intensive, targeted, and short-term instruction that bolsters student literacy skills, proficiency, and the confidence needed to excel as a reader.
The handbook outlines two intervention plans to help students construct meaning while reading which are based on Richardson’s best-selling The Next Step Forward in Guided Reading:
- RISE for students in grades 1–5 reading at guided reading levels C–N, who need to work on decoding, fluency, phonics, reading comprehension, and writing
- RISE Up for students in grades 3–8 reading at guided reading levels O–Z, who need to strengthen their comprehension strategies
With the framework, instructors utilize lesson guides that support meaning-focused instruction for 45–60 minutes, and students rotate in small groups daily for six to eight weeks. Instructors will also have opportunities for collaborative team meetings that help with identifying daily teaching goals, monitoring progress, and deciding when students are ready to exit intervention. In addition, educators will have access to lesson templates, Comprehension Cards, tools for communicating with families about literacy, and online videos that offer insights from experts, among other resources.
