Every year, students from across the country and around the world participate in the Junior Scholastic® "Can You Find Mapman®?" contest, a competition that asks kids to draw a map based on a series of geography clues.
This year’s grand prize winner is Annelise Wall, an eighth grade student from Nardin Academy in Buffalo, New York.
Wall’s map of Faroe Islands was selected from more than 4,700 entries from 43 states and is featured in the May 15, 2017 issue of Junior Scholastic magazine which makes current events relevant to students, as well as social studies and ELA curriculums. Wall will receive $500 and a Mapman T-shirt. The names of the 25 runners up also appear in the Junior Scholastic issue and each runner up will also receive a Mapman t-shirt.
The annual contest encourages students to utilize their map-reading skills and creative talents to draw a map from clues based on “Mapman” Jim McMahon’s location. McMahon is the resident cartographer at Scholastic who oversees the contest and the production of all maps for the Company’s 33 classroom magazines.
Congratulations, Annelise!
