Today on OOM we’re celebrating National Poetry Month! Taking place each April, National Poetry Month increases awareness and appreciation of poetry in the U.S. We here at OOM love a good poem, and we’re taking the time this month to read some great new books from Scholastic. Unbound: A Novel in Verse (Ages 9–12) by Ann E. Burg: Grace was born in bondage, her whole life has been spent in the fields and slave cabins on the Master’s plantation but at least she has Momma and her younger brothers for comfort. When Grace overhears talk of her brothers going to auction, she breaks free, desperately fleeing the plantation with her family. Together they seek sanctuary in the Great Dismal Swamp—a vast, wild wetland spanning the coastal areas of Virginia and North Carolina—all while in a constant state of anxiety over being caught and returned to their vengeful Master.
