Today, on the Scholastic Parents Facebook page, I shared some recommendations for books that celebrate Women's History Month and feature main characters that are smart, strong, and brave. I started out with one of my childhood favorites - The Baby-Sitters Club!
For the full list of titles that we shared, visit the Scholastic Parents 'Raise a Reader' blog.
Thanks to everyone who participated, asking questions and sharing book suggestions in the comments area. Here are some of the 'extras' that came up:
- Who Says Women Can't Be Doctors? The Story of Elizabeth Blackwell, by Tanya Lee Stone and Marjorie Priceman
- Wilma Unlimited: How Wilma Rudolph Became the World's Fastest Woman, by Kathleen Krull and David Diaz
- Mighty Jackie: The Strike Out Queen, by Marissa Moss and C.F. Payne
- Players in Pigtails, by Shana Corey and Rebecca Gibbon
- Queen of the Diamond: The Lizzie Murphy Story, by Emily Arnold McCully
-
A Strong Right Arm: The Story of Mamie "Peanut" Johnson, by Michelle Y. Green
Interestingly, we got a lot of suggestions for books about women in sports - particularly baseball. Track and field was my sport of choice in college and high school; I did the pentathlon, high jump, and triple jump. The contribution of women in sports is a great angle to take for Women's History Month, and both boys and girls will be inspired by their stories of perseverance, grit, and determination.
