Backstage at "Hamilton" with the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps

In case you missed it, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit hip-hop Broadway musical “Hamilton” won an impressive 11 Tony Awards yesterday!

Before “Hamilton” stole the show at the Tony Awards, our Kid Reporter Esther Appelstein, one of 35 Kid Reporters in the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps, went backstage at the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical in New York City! She got the inside scoop on the show, interviewed the cast and talked to audience members!

“The thing I want kids to take away is that the Founders were human,” said "Hamilton" creator, composer, playwright, rapper, and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda to our Kid Reporter. “Because they were like us, they made mistakes, and they made compromises. They were not these statues or monuments. They were real, living, breathing people, just like us.”

Actress Phillipa Soo, who plays Hamilton’s wife, Eliza, explained, “I think it’s become so popular because it makes people feel like real Americans. Lin has done an amazing thing: He has taken an American story and told it through the eyes and ears of today’s America, and we feel very connected to it.”
