You will likley recognize Sonia Manzano as the actress who played the charasmatic "Maria" on Seseame Street, but did you know she's worked on the show—as an actress and a writer—for an incredible 44 years? We recently sat down with Sonia to record a Scholastic Reads podcast episode and not only did she light up our studio with her smile and her laughter, she pulled at our heartstrings with story after story of perseverance.
In this episode, Shaping a Life Story, Sonia talks all about her childhood living in the South Bronx in the '50s and '60s, her time working on Sesame Street, and her career writing novels. Her editor Andrea Davis Pinkney also joins us to discuss the making of Sonia's new coming-of-age memoir, Becoming Maria: Love and Chaos in the South Bronx.
