Empowering the Next Generation of Super Readers: the 2nd Edition of ‘Every Child a Super Reader’ is Available Now

In the second edition of Every Child a Super Reader: 7 Strengths for a Lifetime of Independence, Purpose, and Joy, co-authors and literacy experts Pam Allyn and Ernest Morrell revisit the founding framework of the seven strengths that empower students to become lifelong super readers: belonging, curiosity, friendship, kindness, confidence, courage and hope. Every Child a Super Reader, 2nd Edition argues that reading helps students cultivate the strengths that support their capacity to understand their swiftly evolving world and feel empowered.

The second edition for grades K–8 features a bold new design and highlights updated research on all aspects of the book. The authors emphasize the importance of student choice in reading materials and share new information on culturally responsive reading and ways reading and writing function as mutually beneficial language processes. It also demonstrates how to create digital spaces for students and families in a post-pandemic world and contains a heightened focus on how reading can be viewed as a tool for civic engagement.

The updated version also includes culturally diverse children’s book lists as well as new interactive reading lessons for each of the seven strengths. Educators will find a brand new Seven Strengths Rubric for evaluating students’ growth in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, as well as a wealth of updated management and assessment tools, such as the Yearlong School & District Calendar for super reading, with the sample schedules for elementary school literacy blocks and middle school ELA time.

Highlights from World Read Aloud Day 2021

On Wednesday, February 3rd, we marked the 12th annual World Read Aloud Day

The initiative from Scholastic and the global literacy nonprofit LitWorld calls attention to the importance of sharing stories and creating meaningful learning experiences for kids and families. This year, we teamed up with football champion and literacy advocate Malcolm Mitchell for a special celebration featuring his latest title, My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World. To help kids create and build their home libraries, Scholastic is also donating 10,000 books to Malcolm Mitchell’s Share the Magic Foundation

Teachers, librarians, authors, and readers across the globe took to social media to share their favorite #WorldReadAloudDay moments. Check them out below:

Thank you for joining us and making this day so special! To ensure that reading aloud remains a priority year-round, check out these tips from Pam Allyn, Senior Literacy Advisor to Scholastic, author, founder of LitWorld, and creator of World Read Aloud Day.

How school districts celebrated summer reading with LitCamp

School districts and community partners across the U.S. launched their own Scholastic LitCamp programs this summer to help students avoid the effects of the “summer slide,” the loss of academic skills that occurs during the summer months, which is attributed largely to the lack of reading.

LitCamp redefines the notion of summer school, combining research-based daily reading and writing lessons framed around The 7 Strengths social-emotional literacy learning framework: Belonging, Friendship, Kindness, Curiosity, Confidence, Courage, Hope. With an interactive summer camp theme, the program prepares students to navigate future challenges in and out of the classroom while fostering a sense of joy, community, and accomplishment.

This summer, Pam Allyn, Senior Vice President, Innovation & Development at Scholastic Education, founder of LitWorld, and creator of LitCamp, traveled throughout the country to make special visits to school districts including Prince William County Public Schools and Hampton City Schools in Virginia and Corona-Norco Unified School District in California where she met school and community leaders and hosted interactive read-alouds forLitCampers of all ages. Each school made LitCamp their own with fun, creative approaches to the “camp” theme and special celebrations for literacy. Schools shared that they saw an increase in student engagement and motivation, in addition to a positive impact on overall attendance and student behavior.

By providing robust lessons with specially curated books, LitCamp helps students avoid learning loss and prepare to arrive on the first day of school ready to learn. Check out some of the highlights from Pam Allyn’s LitCamp road trip, below!

The Rise of Read-Aloud: Commentary from Pam Allyn

The Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report™ is a biennial, national survey of children ages 6–17 and their parents, as well as parents of kids ages 0–5, in the U.S. exploring attitudes and behaviors around reading books for fun. As data is released throughout the spring of 2019, we’ve asked a handful of our in-house experts to dig more deeply into the report and contextualize its findings. First up, Pam Allyn is here to discuss The Rise of Read-Aloud:

The power of read-aloud is breaking through and we could not be more excited about it. Compelling research from both the education and medical fields has shown us its importance for parent-child bonding as well as language and literacy development. Families are also telling us it is a deeply profound opportunity to connect in essential ways with children, creating nurturing spaces for them and ways to talk and think together.

The latest Kids & Family Reading Report shows us that the percentage of parents reading aloud during a child’s first three months is up nearly 50% since 2014. And the number of 6–8 year-olds being read aloud to 5–7 days a week is up seven points since 2016. Reason to celebrate! Yet, there is always more work to be done. While a majority of five-year-olds are read aloud to 5–7 days a week, this percentage decreases dramatically at age six and beyond. This outcome shows us we have to grow the message that reading to children is powerful at all ages. It never stops being important and having great impact upon the life of a child.

It’s undeniable that it is hard to fit everything needed to raise a child into a single day, or even week. But I urge you, parents, grandparents, caregivers and educators, to look closely at this powerful data and to see the opportunities that will open up for the child in your life. Parents tell us they are incorporating read-aloud moments into routines, using them at impromptu times throughout the day, reading aloud to foster quiet time or as a part of an already boisterous playtime. And while the study shows that it is still the mother who reads aloud most often to her children, let’s make a new commitment—as dads, as men, as grandfathers, as siblings—to read more often to the children in our homes and in our care.

The beautiful thing about the read-aloud is how it can be tailored to the lifestyles and preferences of families and caregivers. Everyone can join together around the read-aloud to create a sense of well-being and mutual care. It is a prescription for lifelong success for the child and a dose of deep well-being for the family.

Literacy expert Pam Allyn discusses how kids build resilience by reading year-round

The back-to-school season is in full-swing, and as students interact with their new classes and educators at the start of the school year, they have opportunities to build important life skills and learn about themselves, others and the world around them.

Literacy is a powerful tool to enhance this experience and help kids develop resilience and social-emotional skills that they need to succeed in learning and in life, such as critical thinking skills, empathy, perspective and social-emotional strengths including curiosity, courage, hope, confidence, friendship, belonging and kindness.

Over the last several weeks, Pam Allyn, literacy expert, co-author of Every Child a Super Reader, mother and creator of the summer learning program LitCamp, has been speaking about this topic on radio stations across the country, sharing tips for helping kids become enthusiastic, joyful, lifelong super readers. In case you didn’t catch her on the air, here are interview highlights that you can check out to learn more:

Summer LitCamps kick off across the country!

What do you get when you combine research-based reading and writing lessons with summer camp? The answer is LitCamp—a summer literacy program presented with the literacy organization LitWorld and best-selling author Pam Allyn.

While school is out, summer is a crucial time to bolster learning skills by helping students discover the joy of reading. We know from findings in the Kids & Family Reading Report™: 6th Edition that on average, kids read eight books over the summer; however one in five 12–17 year-olds and one in five kids in lower-income families do not read any books at all over the summer. LitCamp helps students avoid the “summer slide” and instead make a leap in literacy skills by providing a fun and interactive framework for literacy support.

Right now, we love seeing all of the photos and videos of students reading, writing, and doing daily activities as schools and community partners across the country kick off their own LitCamps. We rounded up some of our favorites, below!

Be sure to share YOUR LitCamp on social media from using #LitCamp and tagging Scholastic. Happy reading everyone!
