Scholastic News Kid Reporter covers the Iowa caucus

This has been a big week for US politics! Twelve-year-old Lilian Jochmann, one of 35 Kid Reporters in the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps, traveled to Des Moines, Iowa to get the inside scoop on the Iowa caucus on Monday.

While in the Hawkeye State, the Scholastic News team was busy! Throughout the day, Lilian interviewed reporters, talked to voters, listened to Republican and Democratic candidates, and got an inside look at our country’s democratic process. Check out Lilian’s Iowa caucus adventure below and read her full story titled "A Kid at the Caucus," on the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps blog.

For her first stop, Lilian checked out a packed Hillary Clinton campaign event at Abraham Lincoln High School.

At The Today Show in Des Moines, Lilian went backstage to meet NBC weatherman Al Roker, Host Willie Geist, Iowa Hawkeye defensive back Travis Perry, and former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin!

During lunch at Drake Diner, Lilian talked with Governor Mike Huckabee and even snagged a photo.

NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt sat down with our Kid Reporter to discuss the election and his tips for interviewing presidential candidates. Stay tuned for the full video interview!

As the day wrapped up, Lilian watched the ballots get counted at a Republican caucus in Urbandale, IA.
