New 5-word book reviews

On a recent 20 hour plane trip home I finished two books, out of four total that I read on vacation. Add that to all of the picture books I've looked at while cataloging the 2016 ALA Youth Media Award winners, and I am well on the way to my Goodreads goal for the year and getting my first #ScholasticReadingBingo!

I asked the other OOMers what they've read recently and if they could review the book in five words or less, and here's what we've been up to:

  • The Argonauts, by Maggie Nelson – "Big ideas on every page." (Julia)
  • Between the World and Me, by Ta-Nehisi Coates – "Explains personal journey to son." (me!)
  • Blood, Bones & Butter: The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef,by Gabrielle Hamilton – "Honest glimpse into chef’s life." (Brittany)
  • The Book Itch: Freedom, Truth & Harlem's Greatest Bookstore, by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson and Gregory Christie – "Tribute to influential Harlem landmark." (me 2!)
  • Disenchanted: The Trials of Cinderella, by Megan Morrison – "Fractured fairytale Cinderella tackles socioeconomics." (me 3!)
  • The Grownup, a short story by Gillian Flynn  "An amuse-bouche sized horror story." (Gina)
  • Kill the Boy Band, by Goldy Moldavsky – "Never underestimate a fangirl’s passion." (Gina)
  • The Portable Veblen by Elizabeth McKenzie – "Humorist novel about modern marriage." (Michael)
  • Ruby Lee & Me, by Shannon Hitchcock – "Sisterhood and friendship aren't easy." (me 4!)
  • Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay (#3 from The Neapolitan Novels), by Elena Ferrante – "Required reading for fiction lovers." (Julia)
  • Tiny Pretty Things, by Sona Charaipotra and Dhonielle Clayton – "Ballet, competition, envy, ego, danger." (Morgan)
  • Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights, by Salman Rushdie – "Imagined history of jinn apocalypse." (me 5!)
  • Unbecoming, by Jenny Downham – "Intergenerational tearjerker about self-actualization." (me 6!)
  • Voracious, by Cara Nicoletti – "Delicious recipes for the bibliophile." (Michael)
